G3TBK Activity and condx low, previous day was much better! Played second-fiddle to M3TBK, he had first choice of op times, on SSB. G3TXF Starting a new 21-28 MHz at the bottom of the sun-spot cycle is not easy. Is there an AWARD for UK Postal Districts? I don't believe so. In which case having a "multiplier" for the overseas stations which is something that is not "collectable" for any award makes the contest less attractive for potential overseas entrants. I've made this argument before, and will no doubt be making it again in the future! G3ULT/P (G0VQR) Very hard going. Some good DX though. I cannot wait till the sunspot cycle is better. G3WRR Ten-Tec Orion running 100W to triband vertical at ground level. For domestic reasons didn't get on till 5.30 clock time. The good news is that I worked every station I heard. The bad news is that this was one station! Hence this is a check log only.... G3YBY Equipment FT100MPV Quadra 3ele tribander at 50ft. Lot of deep QSB on both bands with high noise levels at times G3YMC Just a little dabble, please treat this as a checklog. CW only. Conditions pretty poor though what I expected them to be like But it was nice to hear a few Europeans on 10m Let's hope this contest picks up when the sunspots return G3ZGC These conditions are no use for a half size G5RV !!! G3ZQH ANT 102' WIRE DOUBLET @ 30FT POWER LESS THAN 100W PEP (KENWOOD TS-830S) G4EBK 100W to 3 band dipole N/S at 6 Mtrs high. not the best set up in the country. Worked more stations than expected but still had time to read my Radcom.. G4EDG grim! G4ERW Enjoyable but slow going. Slower pace allowed for longer QSO's with some stations (ie VP8ON C5DXC). G4FAL A 21/28 contest is probably great for six years of the eleven-year sun-spot cycle; unfortunately this was one of the other five. That being said, 10m was open, short skip, which helped. It was a struggle before 9 am and after 5 pm local time. Managed more Qs than the sum of the two events last year, so am pleased to have seen some improvement. G4IRC/P (G4BAV G0DVJ M0ZZO 2E0XIS) Dead bands at the start but eventually improved G4WGE Quiet and slow! G4ZVB Very poor conditions at start & end of contest. Thank goodness for German stations, they kept the bands alive. Glad 28Mhz was open at least! Enjoyed it though & my Italian got me D44TD on a weeks holiday & an enjoyable QSO with I4WUM in my home city of Ferrara! G8HDK Could'nt manage the full 12hrs but bands seemed O.K SD was excelent |
21/28
MHz Contest October 2006
Falling numbers of entries and competition from the Worked All Germany contest prompted a change from two separate contests to one combined event – did it work? Compared with the previous year there was a good response from UK entrants, but disappointing from overseas, although this is more likely to be the result of the poor propagation into the UK. No VK or W/VE contacts were recorded, although Africa and South America appeared frequently in many logs, and VP8NO provided a welcome DX QSO for many. The severe thunderstorms, predominantly in central England, caused many stations to curtail their activities and may have discouraged others from coming on at all. Poor propagation conditions were commented on by only a few, this probably reflects the low expectations after many months of solar minimum.UK entrants should note that UK call areas do not count as a multiplier in this contest, apart from this the standard of logging was generally good. Version 13.03 or later of SD supports the mixed mode event. With 47 QSOs and 19 multipliers on 10m, Nick Totterdell G4FAL wins the Powditch trophy, and Charles Wilmott M0OXO, operating G4NOK, captures the Whitworth trophy as leading single operator using SSB. The G6VQ trophy for the highest CW score goes to Chris Towle M0AJT. Hopefully as propagation on these bands improves, this contest may yet prove to be re-vitalised in years to come, so the answer to the initial question is we will have to wait and see. John Cockrill, G4CZB SOAPBOX: 2E0KOP/P Very enjoyable contest, looking forward to next year and hopefully better propagation. Thanks too all who worked me and to VP8NO for a new country for my log 2E0NCG Heavy thunderstorms restricted operating time! Nice to hear so many stations on 15m! Nice opening on 10m made contest more interesting! 2E0TLB not on for long but had fun. G0ADH Several electrical storms with accompanying heavy rain and gale force winds to contend with. G0HDB Not a good day - turned the rig on and had a couple of QSOs and then a thunderstorm started so had to switch off and disconnect the aerial. Storm lasted all day so no chance for further QSOs! G0HVQ Really enjoyable thanks to some Es prop on both bands. Good that SSB and CW events now combined. All my aerials down due to building work so strung a dipole between the builders scaffolding. Hope to be back next year, please keep this contest. G0MRH What terrible conditions for a station in Warwickshire centre England made worse by thunderstorms in the Midlands with lightning within a 5 mile radius so all electronics disconnected for about 3 hours. Log sent just to support the 3 I was able to work G0ORH Bands fairly quiet, DX VP8NO worked. Yaesu FT1000MP mk v, 3ele yagi. G0TSM 21MHz FT1000MP 100W+Quad loop apex at 14.5M. 28MHz FT920 100W to a CB vertical 14M to top. DX conditions were definately down on previous years but plenty of Sporadic E allowing short hop European QSOs. It was nice to work a few German novices on both SSB and CW, they actually made up 8% of my QSO total. I ran SO2R using a simple homebrew audio controller, this allowed me to CQ on one band and chase multipliers on the other. G0VAX Very bad band conditions SFI of 78 and A index of 9. SD yet again nothing comes close to it for simplicity. G3JRM (G4RLS G4CKH) An interesting slant to an established contest first time using dual modes.hard slog but some interesting dx to be found. dodged thru a local thunderstorm and with luck may have achieved 10k G3LET Been looking forward to the new look 21/28 ever since the new rules were published only to have work intrude. Managed just 50 minutes. Seemed as though the SSB end was the place to be but a working knowledge of Spanish is essential up there! G3LIK A struggle especially on 10m with wire antenna plus poor support for the contest in these conditions G3MGW In 05 band condx were bad this year they were worse! Not all entrants work from a cosy shack. My shack is in a field very windy conditions. Had to give up due to torrential rain and lightening. This is a great contest please keep it going. G3PJT Very dead and thunderstorms for the afternoon finished it off! G3PSM Thank God for the Germans otherwise it would have been worse than it was. The day previous there had been stations on from VK ZS 9J2 etc If it wasn't for VP8NO and ZC4LI there wasn't too much DX around G3RSD Despite poor propogation to the States it was a useful contest very challenging G3SJJ Nice contest format, pity about condx. 15m has been much improved during the preceding few days. SFI going up, A index going down. Checked WWV when I opened up the DX Cluster and was disappointed to see minor storm and A index up to 15. True to form, very little northern hemisphere propagation. No W/VE, Carib, VK, ZL, UA9 etc. Slightly compensated by some strong Es into the rest of Europe. Amazing amount of newer DLs. A good opening to South America on 15m late afternoon and also on 10m in the last hour. A high proportion (26) of Qs were non contest, ie logged as serial number 0. Had fun clicking on spots to bring them in to 2nd VFO window so I could check them out, although I suspect I might have lost 4 QSOs due to me being more of a radio op than a computer op! GJ7DNI/A I this is one of the hardest contests to do GW0WGG Good Fun with varing conditions throughout the day. Not the same as working from my usual 5Z4IC call and location - maybe next year - Thanks GW4BLE Haven't operated seriously in this one for many years. A casual entry, with an odd hour/half-hour here and there for old-times sake. M0AJT Things can only get better HI. M0DHO Terrible conditions. Could only start after lunch and 15 and 10 were very quiet. M3TBK More activity and better condx than last year, especially from Europe. FT1000MP 10 Watts, 4-Element Yagi at 66 ft MU0FAL seems that the cw ops migrated to ssb EA5TN Kenwood TS2000 (100W) + Cushcraft MA5B EA8MQ I used SD it is wonderful thank you very much for offering it for free. Tks to all gl 73 F5VLD My home call G4HLX (RSGB member) currently working full-time in the south of France (A Year in Provence!) thought I'd try an hour or so in this contest "from the other side". No signals at all heard on 28 MHz. Restricted Section entry (100W to short dipole at 5m) OK1MGW home made tranceiver 5 Watts outpt, aer HB9CV E-sporadic made very good condx and very good contest. SP9KJU Plik utworzony programem "Cabrillo Generator" - (c) SP7DQR YE1AA This is my 2nd time joint the contest. My previous callsign is YB1BAD. Any reward for Oceania? Hope to meet you again next year in better condition. ZC4LI Thanks to all concerned in running the contest. I only heard 1 station an OM3 on 28MHZ all day. A decent amount of activity from G land. |
