SOAPBOX (Overseas): 9M6DXX Five QSOs in the only 30 minutes the band was open from UK to Borneo! Rig: TS-2000 to small TV sweep tube amplifier at about 250W PEP to KLM KT-34A beam at 45ft. HA2MN Due to high local noise and very poor propagation I gave it up after a while. Several times 10 meter was checked, I heard nothing there but noise too. Thanks for Qs, see you next year! Rig TS-530SP 100 W into an end-fed 20 mtrs long ant above flat roof. HA5LZ Many thanks for the nice contest! SRI but CONDX is poor on a both BANDS OK1ARO Poor conditions next may be better I hope OM4JD There were not too many participants from UK. CONDX allowed to QRV few hours only. MHz Contest October 2007 A recurrent comment among entrants this year was experiencing poor or variable propagation, particularly on 10m (non-existent for some!), so it was pleasing to see that there was no reduction in the number of logs received compared to last year. Some UK participants found contacts hard to come by and reported giving up after a few hours, primarily those without the benefit of a beam antenna, but those that persevered were rewarded with openings to all continents on 21MHz giving many new multipliers to boost their scores. On 28MHz the majority of contacts were within Europe but there was a path to South America late in the day. The best score on this band and winner of the Powditch Transmitting Trophy was Stephen Redmond MW0ZZK/P with a total of 26 contacts/11 multipliers, most of which were made in two short spells between 10.15 and 11.15 in the morning. Stephen also receives the Whitworth Trophy as the leading UK single operator entry. The highest score using CW only, and winner of the T E Wilson G6VQ Trophy, was G5XV/P operated by Avril 2E0KOP. Openings outside Europe on both bands were short so it was difficult for non-Eu entrants to make a competitive score - 9M6DXX reported just a 30 minute opening into the UK. This log was one of several received from outside Europe, which was a welcome improvement over last year’s first combined CW/SSB event and hopefully the start of a continuing upward trend. October 2008 should be noticeably into the beginning of the next solar cycle, so this may give encouragement to everyone who found it hard work this year, particularly those with single element antennas. Once again UK entrants need to be reminded that points or multipliers cannot be claimed for the UK call areas. John Cockrill, G4CZB SOAPBOX (UK): G0ADH At least the weather was better this year. G0HVQ Conditions not too bad considering we're at rock bottom of the solar cycle (heard VK & YB on 21) but hard going nonetheless. Bits of Es on 10m but no QSOs. Looking forward to the return of some sunspots so that us minnows can make a few more QSOs, good contest tho. G0MTN Listened and replied to those I could hear (with windom) whilst doing other jobs around the house. G0TSM FT1000mp mk5, 200W + Hexbeam @20ft. DX Cluster used hence multi-op. I couldnt really get on much in the afternoon hence the terrible score. Some nice DX about considering SFI was 67. G3GLL Band conditions very poor G3HQX No signals heard on 10m at any time. Condx on 15m were very variable and unstable. G3KNU Gave up after lunch G3MPB condx poor G3RSD This is a contest for those with plenty of stamina. Next year will be a lot better loads of sunspots! G3SJJ I didn't do as well as last year but better than I thought I would do! Had a ropey start. Realised I had chosen the wrong contest format in N1MM with Commonwealth Contest. It accepted serial numbers OK but reckoned SSB Qs for the same call on the other mode were dupes. The first 1.5 hours had produced just 12 Qs including OD5, V51, 5R8, UA9, 9J2 so it was supposedly an easy job to print the Cabrillo file and re-enter them, this time choosing IOTA format. Hmm, my printer decided to play up and I had to re-boot the computer twice before it would work! Then I had to do a 200m return trip to the mast to by-pass the WX0B Sixpak relay box. Occasionally the relay tagged to my beam goes to Open state, and this was one of those occasions! Didn't do anything for my state of non-calm! Quickly picked up 9M6DXX, VU and ZD7X to restore my confidence and settle the nerves! Continued with short sessions of CQing on all 4 band-slots, plus long sessions of searching including 8Q7AK who asked me to spot him which I did, and occasional swooping on DX Spots, such as A7. I think I would have worked more quantity had I CQed more but that wasn't my chosen strategy. There was no run of DLs on 10m like last year. Late afternnon saw a number of nice SA mults like ZP, CX, LU, PY. I like the dual band/mode format and sure it will be much busier when we get more sunspots, though like Ed GW3SQX commented recently I guess UK works RoW format is past its sell by date now. Hopefully there will still be sufficient UK support and activity otherwise this contest will need to be scrapped. We might even get a trophy by then!! Equioment - FT1kMP, Acom1k, A4S at 50ft. G3UJE FT1000MP Mk 5 Field / ACOM 1000 / C19XR. Hard work filling the log. Should be more fun when propagation improves. G3VQO Conditions poor so didn't hear much with just a wire antenna - briefly heard one station on 10m but couldn't break the pile-up. When I returned he'd gone!! I expect to come last sent serial 004 twice in error - no 005 G3VYI very poor condx !! heard 9j2bo at start but missed him later! Really minimum condx. G3WRR Poor conditions - only popped on from time to time the day during the weekend chores! G3YBY Much quieter than last year only half the QSO's with a better antenna. Short skip into W. Europe much less this year. 10m pretty dead. G3ZNR Alinco DX70 Tx/Rx (5W) + 66' Doublet + 12AVQ vertical G3ZQH 80W PEP (KENWOOD TS-830S), ANT 102'DOUBLET @ 40FT. All I can say is roll on the sunspots! Painfully slow for the hours at the start and at the end, and not that much better in the middle! Had a couple of reasonable hours on 15m mid-morning, but absolutely nothing (apart from other Gs) on 10m despite calling regularly. Most of the afternoon was spent digging out QSOs- hard work with the dx cluster switched off- but there was some good DX and a number of sympathetic African and Latin American stations helped with multipliers. Several German stations asked for my WAB square- perhaps this would be a better exchange than district code and encourage more participation? I have good memories of this contest from many decades back, but it does need some further livening up for the low sunspot years. G4DBW Very boring indeed with QRP and wire antennae Elecraft K2 10 watts output to a G5RV and a 21 MHz dipole Nothing heard on 28MHz at all Maybe RSGB should hold a 3.5/7MHz contest instead during sunspot minima ??? not even RSGB can beat the sunspot cycle !! G4DDL Very Poor condx Only put entry in to keep numbers up My score rock-bottom I expect HI! Need better antennas for these bands in low sunspots G4EBK Better condx than expected but still very poor from east coast. Very high noise level not helped by my dipole only being 6 Mtrs high. G4FAL The Nadir G4FKA A casual entry, CW only. Started just before 0900, CW only, and worked stations until 1418. Called for a further couple of hours after that but no QSOs, although 15m was still open. Three QSOs on 28. Kept going back to the band every few minutes but nothing heard after 1043. IC756ProIII, 100w, half wave sloping diople cut for 12m band, top at 10m. G4IUF Suddenly there was K3ZO & VP8NO, but no more ! Enjoyed using SD in this contest (yes really) G4RCG Terrible condx gave up after 4 hours after working just over 80 qso's G4WGE As slow and painful as last year despite 50% more contacts! Got bored and gave up. G4ZVB Expected better conditions this year but 10m a waste of time. Enjoyed 15m though, especially with an opening to South America right at the end. Worth sticking it out right to the end. Very pleased with the homemade loop. G5XV/P Some good Dx worked and opening to VK & USA, and VP8, on 15m were nice. Avril, 2E0KOP. GM3CFS Truly dreadful cndx but some pleasant surprises GM4HQF Thanks for running the contest. Condx too poor for QRP Nothing heard on 10m band up here. I used SD by EI5DI for logging. Great program M0AAA Very hard going at times. A few good DX stations. The bands just died from 1446. I did not work one station after that even though I stayed with it till the end. A lower score than last year. Was it worth 12 hours operating for just over 50 contacts, I dont think so. M0CNP Worst ever entry with my best ever equipment! There were just no signals available for me to work! M3TBK Hoping to make 5 consecutive QRP wins, but don't think I did enough! Condx very poor, but some good DX. Used CW for first time in a Contest. Mni stations did not give S. No. MM0GPZ Not serious at all. FT2K,100w into Force 12 3CSS at 35 feet. No dx but a bit of fun. Worked some dx during contest that didn't give serial. MU0FAL just a short showing on 15m ten was open but no one was participating all calling dx trips |
