M0DWQ: My first 160m contest - noisy! M0NBG: Must use better antenna next time. We were using 80m dipole as top hat but was getting too much interference from central heating systems so changed to tuned 80m dipole. Lots of stations there but just could not be heard. M0TWS: My first attempt in a 160m contest. Only operated for a limited time. Very pleased with results with random wire antenna! M0VBY: First time - thanks to all for being patient. M1EBV: Thanks to G3YHV for his excellent logging software. A great help. MM5AHO: S9 noise throughout meant missing many weaker stations, but enjoyable contest all the same. MX0TMR: Our first attempt at Club Calls for this group. We used WinTest for networked logging plus a second receiver; both for the first time. Some teething problems with a foot switch and the second rx delayed our start and meant we didn't test a temporary dipole until after the contest. Very enjoyable. We plan to be back next year. IC756P2 + Carolina Windom @14m, FT897 + Dipole @14m. |
Club Calls Contest 2007 Entry for this event was only slightly up on 2006, but that is not a true reflection of the situation. Across the board, stations made between 10% and 20% more contacts than last year. The leader's log alone contains the callsigns of 13 Club Stations, 40 Club Members and 35 Non-Members who did not submit their logs. Disappointing, as some of these stations were high-scoring and had obviously gone to a lot of trouble to take part!Conditions were not of the best - very few overseas callsigns appear, even in the leaders' logs, and many stations reported high noise levels, especially during the latter part of the event. This, together with the high band occupancy, may account, at least in part, for the generally poor logging accuracy. There were only a handful of error-free logs outside the bottom twenty, and a number of stations lost points in truly heroic quantities. All the logs were rescored by the adjudicator ... just as well for those who claimed 25, 5 and 3 points instead of 28, 8 and 3! Some stations will notice that their adjudicated score is greater than that which they claimed! As a general rule, it is assumed that what a station logs as the 'sent' exchange is what was actually sent, but in this event it appears to be tradition that no two members call their club by the same name. A number of entrants always comment, and the adjudicator always bears this in mind when checking. However, two stations had 25% and 35% respectively of their serial numbers 'miscopied' by stations who worked them. In these cases, the points were deducted from the sending stations' scores. Phil Daniells, GJ4CBQ, is the overall leader for the second year running, although this time using his own, rather than a club callsign. He receives a certificate of merit. The Ariel Trophy for the leading Club Station is taken by GX3WOR, operated by G8FMJ on behalf of the Worthing and District ARC. The certificate for the highest-placed Non-Club-Member is awarded to Andy Swiffin, GM8OEG, in 35th position overall. The David Hill, G4IQM, Memorial Trophy (for the best aggregate score of 5 Club Members) goes again to the Hadley Wood CG, although by a much reduced margin. Steve Knowles G3UFY SOAPBOX: G0IDA: Enjoyed it very much once more, activity was up and certainly more Club Stations out this year.Conditions at the beginning had QSB with Russian stations heard quite clearly but towards the end conditions were much more stable with loud inter UK signals here in London. Look forwrd to next year :-) G0KYS: First ever top band contest entry! Only on for 2 hours, but pleased with the results. IC706, Longwire TX, Dipole for 17m RX. G0OLE: First attempt at contest from this QTH, strugged to get antenna to work on topband, more like field day with ATU in recyclable carrier bag on the lawn under the inverted L. S9++ noise level all through the contest, apologies to stations who we could not hear. Back next year with some planning more than half an hour before the contest starts. Great fun and very different from VHF FD. G1WKS: Would be REALLY nice to have a proper logging program for this contest G3HYH: Hard work. Paper log then SD G3JIR: It was good to hear so many newer callsigns in the contest G3LET: Actually managed to keep up a dupe sheet this year, which allowed some S&P towards the end without too much embarrassment. A lot of the signals were quite hard to read, although the band didn't appear crowded. Always good to hear the way some of the clubs really turn out. G3LIK: Had an S8 noise level throughout the contest and other stations had a job to copy me. Gave up in the end as it was hopeless to continue. G3LRS: Great contest once again G3RHH: My first attempt at this contest. Good fun and plenty of activity. Noise came up towards the end. G3SAD/P: Not many callers in the last hour! Still, it was good fun with my 30 watts. G3YHV: Band conditions very poor and noisy - but nice contest G3ZBU: Best contest of the year, if you ask me. Shame the antenna wasn't more substantial. (Inverted U at 40 feet max) G3ZJG: First time in the contest, paper log then SD G3ZME: Band conditions good, enjoyed using SD G4AHG/P: Lots of very loud local QRM. G4SJX: A great contest yet again. Good turn out of Leicester RS members this year. Used combination of G3WGV's "LOG" and SD G5RR: An enjoyable contest, lots of activity and well supported by our club members. GJ3DVC: Just unfortunate I had my daughters birthday dinner before the contest. Missed the first 20 mins GM8OEG: A fun contest, must find a club to join for next year :-) GX0RGH: Good activity levels. Noisy band. Great fun as usual. New QTH used this year GX3GWB: The usual confusion among some club members as to what their club name is! GX3UES/P: It would be nice if there was a dedicated computer programme for this contest. Good fun but the pub called early GX5XV: Some frequency stealing otherwise a very pleasant contest. M0BPQ: Out portable in North London using IC-756Pro and inverted V dipole. No problems this year. Good activity from both club stations and members M0CNP: Unfortunately, I had a cold, then lost my voice at 1915, so had to cease. Maybe next time I'll use the memory playback facility in my FT920 recording all the necessary contest exchange information. For the hour and a bit I did it, very enjoyable, but very slow.
