2nd 1.8 MHz Contest 2008 This contest continues to grow in popularity - with a total of 119 logs received plus 4 checklogs. This represents another small increase of 8% over the previous event in February 2008; however, the majority of the increase is predominantly due to the increase of European competitors. In fact, for this event, there was almost double the quantity of overseas logs submitted for adjudication, compared to the UK. Most entrants seemed to concur that conditions or activity levels were somewhat down on previous contests. Particularly noticeable was the lack of workable stations from North America appearing in the logs. A few USA stations were active – but one station – WD5R – who was active from Arkansas, managed to work 8 UK stations. European activity levels were boosted by an OE 160m contest that was running alongside the RSGB event. It was great to receive logs from competitors that were either new to topband, or returning to the band and contesting after a break. In addition, there were 5 ‘small pistols’ running QRP that seemed to enjoy the competition, despite the obvious problems with QRM and QRN. Comments have been received suggesting that the last hour of the contest was very, very laborious. So much so, that in at least one case, the competitor admitted to dropping off to sleep before the end of the contest! Separately, a question regarding the lower frequency limitation for this contest has also been raised. Both items are to be reviewed by the Contest Committee. In Section A, (UK), with a huge score of 1222, the leader and winner, of the Victor Desmond Trophy is once again Clive Penna, GM3POI. In addition, Clive also retains the Maitland Trophy as he has the highest average score from GM, for both the 1st and 2nd 1.8MHz Contests in 2008. In 2nd Place, 160 points behind Clive, with a score of 1062 points is a new entrant - Bob Barden MD0CCE operating from the Isle of Man. In third spot, with a score of 1035 points is regular competitor Roger Cooke, G3LDI. In Section B (Overseas), the leader once again is Paul O’Kane, EI5DI. With a score of 482 points, Paul is 61 points ahead of 2nd placed entrant Dennis Andrews, F5VHY, who scored 421 points. In third place, with 382 points is another regular Topband entrant - Roland Milker, DL2OM. Once again, I urge you all to check your logs before submitting them. This year, I received one log that had just 16 QSO’s in it – but, unbelievably, all QSO’s apparently occurred at the same time - according to the log! In addition, I also received a log from a station - right at the end of the submission date deadline - with an attached log from other some European DX contest. Unfortunately, both logs were disqualified. Congratulations to the worthy winners and thanks to everyone that took part. I hope to see you all in the next contest.
