First Ropoco Contest 2008 Many people woke up on the Sunday morning to find there had been a substantial fall of snow overnight and this may have encouraged some to stay in and take part in the contest rather than venture out for an outdoor activity. In terms of entries this was the best supported RoPoCo 1 since 2005 and the snow may have been a contributory factor, but it is also pleasing to see yet more new entrants to this event, both new licensees and experienced operators – perhaps the fun element noted by participants has got around. Winning by the slenderest of margins was Clive Penna GM3POI and to complete a clean sweep for Scotland the Verulam Silver Jubilee Trophy for the highest placed entrant with a perfect log is awarded to Stewart Cooper GM4AFF. There were only five error-free logs this year in spite of the fact that one postcode was being proliferated to the extent that many entrants found that they were exchanging this same postcode for their last few contacts. This may have caused the concentration to slacken but there were a number of corruptions to this code also being circulated, and this did catch out many entrants. I also noted that where a non-599 RST was sent this was often missed by the receiving station. It is important to copy what has been sent and not what you think has been sent! Judging by the varied comments this contest remains a fascinating and enjoyable challenge to all who take part and quite different to the standard RST + serial number event – and an achievement to get an error-free log. Thanks to all entrants for the high standard of every log received which made the task of adjudication relatively easy; and to G4OBK for the useful checklog. John Cockrill G4CZB SOAPBOX: 2E0RYB Enjoyed it greatly. SD vgi but unable to get it to work the keyer, so all sent on the paddles. In sum ways more rewarding but still v much a novice at CW so tnx for all your patience, guys! Hope to be better next time around G0ADH Very quiet in the second half but still a fun contest. 8am ~ 10am suits me just fine. G0IBN very enjoyable with SD doing all the work G0MTN Just QRV for the last 30 mins. Busy with YL and snow beforehand :-) G0ORH Missed the start, playing with my puppy in the deep mornings snow! G3GLL SD worked fine. Late starter! G3HEJ Gentlemen – again a grand contest. Many thanks! G3JJZ The usual crop of strange codes including a split 6 If only more care was taken rather than speed. G3LDI I sent my own post code for the first two contacts so messed up to start with, realised what I had done, but then had to resort to manual logging! Novel contest, first time I have entered and will be doing the second one. G3LIK Lot of QRN first hour due to heavy snow storm A lot of good signals from stations G3MA FT101ZD + Dipole G3RFH Made a few more QSOs than last time. Conditions seemed fairly good. G3SHF First RoPoCo - enjoyed it very much G3VIP Stations all in bottom 15khz at start, enjoyed contest. G3VYI Lots to work till the end nearly! Everyone should use manual keying!! G4BJM Heard but not worked: GU3TUX and G3NKS Good fun and activity G4BLI Good to see a wide range of licencees taking part G4CWH Enjoyable contest as always. Keep the format G4DDX Snow stopped me sailing so was able to take part and enjoyed myself. G4EBK Ususally starts fast then slows, this time slow all the way through. G4ERW My first ROPOCO and came on for the last 30 minutes. Different from 'normal' contests and good fun. SD is ideal for this contest and worked fine. G4FAL Ropoco was fun as always. Please join in - it isn't difficult and it can be quite amusing; for example, I seem to have moved to the other side of Sheffield during the contest. Not nice when you are a Sheffield United fan, hi. G4FKH I enjoyed this contest very much especially using SD. G4FNL The weather changed from a sunny morning at the start to 3in of snow at the end. Thanks to all for the Qs G4FUI Yaesu FT-897D, dipole at 25ft G4OGB Condx OK ....where was everyone? SD worked well again. G4WGE Nice contest - right time of day - right duration Despite the reflector comments - this contest ain't broke and doesn't need fixing! G4XPE Rig TS830S. Power 100 watts RF output. Antenna trap dipole inverted vee apex 3.81 meters agl One of the worst contests I have ever had! It started with the rig blowing a fuse during tune up and I lost 20 minutes dismantling the station to replace the fuse. Then on 4 separate occasions my PDA sounded off with reminders of forthcoming appointments. Next I had to take a phone call. Finally, at 0811, S8 of white noise suddenly erupted from nowhere and lasted for 13 minutes during which time I could only work the genuine '599' stations. Oh the joys of contesting! But still good fun. GM3POI This Contest would be better supported in the evening GM4OSS Band noisey. SD work well as usual. Band noisey. SD work well as usual. GM4SID Unusualy high number of errors this time. SD handled this contest perfectly again. GW0ETF As usual could do with more participants... GW3PRL My first RoPoCo phew! SD works fine for me wish I could work fine for SD! All good fun and very civilised! GW3SQX Dipole at 57ft, TS-930, Alpha 87A My best total for a while in this contest, but I'm sure there are errors in the log! M0AAA Some very strange postcodes. M0AJT Always a nice contest to enter but greater participation would make it even better. Used SD logger, thanks Paul it worked flawlessly M0NZA Missed the first part..oops! Really enjoyable contest. Thanks for all the contacts. M3ZYN Yaesu FT-950(10W), sloping dipole at 7metres. Non-computer logging! |
