MHz Contest October 2008 Judging by the overall tone of the many comments about the contest this year, it would seem that for many the propagation on both bands this year fell a long way short of expectations. However, looking at the transition period between the last few solar cycles, about two years of very low sunspot activity appears to be normal, so an expectation of something similar to the 2007 contest would have seemed reasonable. But it turned out much worse than that! Very few participants found anything to work on 10m and many found the QSO rate so low that they gave up after a few hours. Those that did persevere found stations to work right through to the end, with multipliers available from Africa, North America and South America later in the day. The total number of logs submitted from both the UK and overseas was almost identical to 2007. In all sections, CW was the most popular mode and five CW-only certificates have been awarded out of the six available. The winner this year of the T. E. Wilson G6VQ Trophy for the highest score using CW only is Peter Hobbs G3LET. Using a 13m SteppIR vertical, Peter also leads the Restricted section with his total of 82 QSOs/44 multipliers, the latter including PY/CE/W1- 4/VO1/J8/7X/9Q/A2, demonstrating that even at times of poor propagation, DX can be worked with a simple antenna and 100W. 10m proved to be a real graveyard for those without a beam or 400W, and the Powditch Trophy for the highest score on that band goes for the second year running to Stephen Redmond MW0ZZK/P in the Open section. He found a couple of late openings to South America were a prime source of points and multipliers. Stephen also takes the Whitworth Trophy again for the highest score using SSB only, but this year was relegated into second place in the Open section by Bob Barden MD0CCE with a mixed mode entry. Bob also found beaming to South America very profitable on 15m in the last few hours of the contest. A similar story of 10m contacts being few and far between was the experience of the overseas participants, and a mixed mode entry using 15m only from Molnar Csaba HA6PX led the Open section. Molnar's contacts were all made between 1001 and 1307. In the Restricted section a CW only entry from Matija Vierda 9A3VM secured the top spot, and in the QRP section a mixed mode entry from Oleg Yankevich RA6FUZ had the edge on the three CW entries. The last UK – Eu contact recorded in the logs received was at 1507. Without doubt this was another difficult year to make enough contacts on 15m and 10m to keep it interesting throughout the 12 hours, and it turned out to be very much one for the patient and thoughtful operator. I hope I have allocated everyone to their correct section and mode as the log header information was not always completely clear in this respect. John Cockrill, G4CZB SOAPBOX (UK): G0ADH At least conditions can't get too much worse G0IBN What a waste of time - good job it was raining G3LET There seemed to be a lot of grumbling about conditions and activity, but everything was more or less as expected at this time of the cycle and could have been a lot worse. I was pleased to be called by J88DR for #1. A lot of fruitless CQs, so many QSOs were nicked off the side after working other stations. 21MHz was still well open to S America when I called it a day at 1645 but nothing new on CW G3MPB Poor Conditions G3PSM What abysmal conditions! But full marks to Peter G3LET for persevering. Thanks also to Dave J88DR and LW3DG who showed the band was open at times. G3RFH Conditions appalling. First 2 hours only stations I heard were 3 UK. Then heard them working stations that I couldn't hear. Several 'got aways' ZS6 PP5 CE6. Was pleased to get 1 QSO on 10m. G3VYI Very low signals from all directions!! Nice to work 4 continents on silent band at start! Missed hearing 9J2BO? Hard work with no beam! Still enjoyable, especially EI5DI log. G3XYF Condx were awful only hrd Europe and G heard 2 Gs on 10m nothing else heard PY on 15m cw the day before G3ZQH Very difficult condx- much worse than the last two years. Stuck at it on and off all day, but QSOs were very hard to come by. I could hear some surprisingly good DX but my 100w to a doublet just could not get through! As a bonus I had some nice chats with locals I'd not met before- a very welcome break from the fruitless CQing. G3ZRJ Please bin this contest until the bands improve it is a waste of a day and like others Ive contacted I felt there were more interesting things to do than listen to band noise G4DBW Elecraft K3 h/brew amplifier 40 watts output to a rotary dipole Very slow going. Some surprising DX worked but not a great deal of activity? S9 woodpecker QRM on 21MHz made life even more difficult G4EBK Good job computers can multi task, kept me busy between qso's. Stayed on watch till the end, nothing heard after 1400Hrs. G4ELY I was not sure what area code to send. Sent BS. Should have sent RG. Will know next year. G4FAL Seemed to plenty of UK stations active. Conditions slightly down on last year. The sun was reported to have a spot today. Lets hope for a few more by next year. G4FSU Condx terrible. Nothing on 10m bar a few lonely Gs. 17 QSOs on 15 of which 2 were UK, presumably feeling sorry for my lonely CQs! I reckon this is the absolute bottom of the sunspot cycle! Thanks to Paul for SD as ever. G4IUF Bit like watching paint dry - come back sunspots. Enjoyed using SD new version. G4MEM Very slow, all on 15M with the occasional unsuccessful look for signals on 10M. No openings to generate the Q's in any great numbers, Europeans weak. Some strong stations from South America but not in quantity. G4RCG Very poor condx so did not bother too much really, BUT this contest should be scored to allow inter G contacts for points and multi's cant understand for the life in my why it's not G4RFR Slow going conditions poor Bad interference on CW end of band GM3POI Should have spent more time at it GM4SID So very bored that I decided to pack in so that I could watch my favourite Sunday Evening TV Progs. M0CNP Absolutely dreadful conditions. I worked ALL I heard, and one station I chased for 1 hour to work him. Roll on some decent sun spot changes! M0EEE Very very slow this year, Lost interest very quickly. Hopefully things will start to improve next year. M0KOP Bit slow going to say the least, still a few managed to hear my signals. Things can only get better or so they say! Still a favorite despite the bands being closed....ish. Hopefully 2009 will be better! M0REG/P Wet start to a dry contest Not many stations about, but some reasonable DX p MM0GPZ Band appalling any time I listened today. No replies to any CQ call on 21 SSB in spite of 400w and 2 ele beam. No Q's on 28 at all. Very little activity heard here at all. Maybe get some sunspots next year. MU0FAL Saturday 10 and 15 were wide open Sunday not so MU0GSY Near gale force winds prevented me starting the contest till after midday MW0ZZK/P very hard work all day band was open but not many calls WX fine noise low worse than last year some good openings AF SA |
