Club Calls Contest 2008 94 entries were received for this year’s Club Calls Contest, 2 up on 2007. The distribution of entries between categories was very similar to last year, with 34 Club Stations, 59 Club Members, and 2 Non Club stations submitting entries. A further 6 Club Stations and 34 Club Members who made more than 10 contacts were active did not submit logs. The total number of contacts was down by about 10% compared with last year.Logs were received in a variety of formats, perhaps reflecting the general absence of support of support for CCC by major contest logging programs: in a number of cases key header information was omitted and had to be sought off line. The accuracy of logs varied considerably: 21 logs were error free, but 22 had error rates in excess of 10%, the highest being over 70%. It is also clear that some stations were occasionally not sending what they claimed to be sending (typically sending Club Station rather than Club Member, and in a few cases G rather than GX prefixes): in such cases the receiving stations have not been penalised. A wide variety of types of radio were in use, mainly from Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood. The IC746/756 and FT1000 series appeared most frequently. Likewise, a range of different antenna types were reported, including doublets, inverted Vs and Ls, Windoms, verticals and loops. The most frequently reported was the half wave dipole. Entrants’ comments were consistent in reporting that the contest had been enjoyable, but that static rain had been a problem. However opinions on conditions varied between those who thought they were good or very good, and those who felt they were quieter than previously. The overall winner and recipient of the Ariel Trophy is G0RAF, the Club Station of the RAF Waddington ARC – a big improvement from 54th place in 2007. The David Hill, G4IQM, Memorial Trophy, awarded for the highest aggregate score of 5 club members, goes to Shirehampton ARC, up from second place last year. Quin Collier G3WRR SOAPBOX: 2E0CTTInteresting evening with an improvement on previous years G0EJQ Very good conditions G0EUN Enjoyable contest, good conditions G0OLE Great contest: weather not very good, static rain and high noise level. Some very strong signals G0RAF Good fun on the evening apart from the varients given for club names - rain static built as the contest progressed G1WKS Would be REALLY nice to have a proper logging program for this contest G2FJA As they said at HFC 2008 - just do it and enjoy. So I did - and did, enormously! G3NFB Enjoyable contest G3TKF Great conditions - pity about the stupid deliberate QRM G3ZBU Great fun but conditions seemed a bit quieter than usual with only an S7 noise level G3ZVW Good score again this year from QTH in S Herts G4FBS Friendly contest G4LDL First time tried a 160m contest Missed first hour as took kids to the fireworks - but great fun G4LMW G4UHZ Very good contest! G5FZ Create a Windows version please. Band conditions reasonable G5MW Really enjoyed this short, slow paced, non aggressive and friendly contest. Log submitted mainly for cross checking as I know that our club score is low!! As a future idea, this format of contest would be ideal say over XMAS week during the day to avoid trailing around sales with YL! G6IPU With the rain mud computer with run time errors and a very slow start we had "fun". See you all next year G7SKR Hastily constructed home-brew vertical worked well and was my first time on top-band. Contest was long enough to get in to the swing of things with the long exchange G8YMW Good contest. This was the first time I have used this log from hamradio deluxe so I hope it is OK GC4CC Windy WX but great fun (as usual). Condx quite good. QRN level fairly low. Used SD in Post Contest Mode--a bit tedious!! GX0RGH Not so busy as previous years. Great fun though. Thanks to organisers GX3GWB High noise level from static rain GX3RAL Strong winds caused a disconnection at the feed point of the dipole. Repair carried out in driving rain. Good fun!! GX3ZME Good contest GX8MWA Enjoyed this short contest M0CHK Lots of stations on again. I think there was more Club stations & a few I haven’t heard before. Good fun but a bit political M0CNP Having discovered an antenna fault during the first half of the contest, things improved M0COP Used SD and logged contest as RSGB AFS, worked well M0LUY/P Good contest M5ARC/P 101ZD performed faultlessly, plenty of stations to work. One station said we were happiest sounding on band!!! no problems whatsoever.... brilliant!! Catering by G8JUZ (site owner) excellent!!! Logging by M0GAX & M0TVT - Thanks chaps! |
