1st 1.8 MHz Contest 2009 The conditions and activity levels for the RSGB 1st 1.8MHz contest were down on previous events. There were a total of 95 logs received plus 6 checklogs. Once again, the quantity of Overseas logs exceeded those from the UK. Some familiar callsigns were absent and as a couple of entrants noted – perhaps it was because this contest coincided with Valentines Day! A high “A” index figure was probably the cause of the poorer conditions experienced. Certainly the overall QSO numbers were down on previous occasions. As in previous years, this contest coincided with the Dutch PACC contest - which helped to boost the activity levels. There was some DX worked by the UK stations, including 4S7, W1, W8 and W5 call areas. Despite the poorer conditions, there were some QRP stations that managed to make a healthy number of QSO’s. The highest place QRP station is Eddi DK3UZ, who made a very creditable 8th place running 5 watts from an Elecraft K2. Not surprisingly, the stations with relatively high aerials and full power made the top scores. In Section A, (UK), with a score of 970 points, the leader and winner of the Somerset Trophy is Clive Penna GM3POI. In 2nd place, with a score of 947 points is Don Beattie G3BJ and in third spot, with a score of 942 points is Justin Snow G4TSH. In Section B (Overseas), the leader is Paul O’Kane EI5DI, with a score of 376 points. In 2nd place, with 329 points is Gediminas Lucinskas LY9A. In third place, with 305 points is Fraser Robertson F/G4BJM. There was one problem that required some additional adjudication care where unfortunately, one G station, instead of using the published RSGB 2-digit area codes, gave out a wrong (3 digit) area code. Consequently, there were some inadvertent incorrect claims resulting from this error. It was apparent from some of the logs and comments received that there is some confusion regarding what to do when the other station does not send you the expected response. The general rule applies: “log and record whatever they send” and if no serial number is sent, then log that as “000”. My congratulations to the worthy winners and thanks to everyone that took part. In particular my thanks go to those stations that kindly sent in a checklog. I look forward to seeing you all in the 2nd 1.8MHz contest in November 2009.
