Ropoco Contest 2009 This year's contest is notable for two reasons, a good proportion of first time entrants and a bumper crop of error-free logs, 19 in total. With the usual selection of weird and corrupted postcodes being circulated, the latter statistic may indicate that many decided to concentrate on accuracy rather than speed. One common error this year was the 'correcting' of an character back to what it had been at the start. Some codes were corrupted, corrected, then corrupted again! In first place by a clear margin, and with one of those 19 error-free logs, is Ed Taylor GW3SQX who wins the Verulam Silver Jubilee trophy and the certificate for the highest placed perfect log. Over the last few years, a common theme to comments from entrants has been the lack of stations to work in the second hour. In response to this, both RoPoCo contests in 2010 will be reduced to 90 minutes, but note that the start time of 0800 UTC is unchanged. As an interesting exercise, a table with just the contacts made by this year's entrants in the first 90 minutes was compared with their total from the full two hours. The number of contacts made in the last 30 minutes varied from none to ten, and the truncated table does show some big differences in the top ten positions, reflecting that even some of the higher-placed entrants found the last quarter quite profitable. Maybe the comments will be 'too short' next year! John Cockrill G4CZB SOAPBOX: G0ADH Last quarter seemed a bit quieter than usual. G0FYX Only able to take part for a short time. Super Duper SD logging program works well G0IBN i always enjoy this contest although i would have prefered it to be busyer G0LZL sd performed well. thanks Paul for free logging software G0PSE My first ROPOCO contest – very enjoyable. As usual SD worked fine – but I must have done something wrong with SDCHECK - but Paul rescued me. G0WBC a great contest that concentrates the mind as usual. got very quiet in the last half hour, even thought about shooting off to ASDA but managed to resist the temptation! G3BJ Seemed rather a shortage of activity G3GLL Sorry could only do the first half-hour. SD worked fine G3GMM TS530S + Doublet G3JJZ Paper on-air log then SD post-contest for Cabrillo Found clear CQ freqs but very poor response. Good to hear a number of recent callsigns. G3JRM (G4RLS) good to hear so many sunday early risers mostly old favourites with a smattering of newer (to me) calls the usual changing early spring propagation to keep the edge worked everyone I could hear though a real struggle towards the end sd great as always G3LDI Very slow, not much activity in this contest. Some very strange postcodes about! Enjoyable however as it does keep the brain active more than usual. G3LHJ njoyable as ever condx good nice to meey the usual gang cu in #2 de Derrick G3LHJ G3LIK Some good conditions. Nice to hear some new calls. Not that many stations about during the test as normal Good to have SD for logging G3OLB Only came on for half an hour - Who was at SY22 6BE?? G3VIP RIG IC7000 40W - 40M ENDFED LW - Homebrew logger Makes a change instead of laying in bed. Enjoyed test, rate slowed in last hour. G3ZGC Rig IC7700 200w to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft long garden. Conditions were good and it sounded busier than normal. G4AIU SD performed very well. A very friendly contest with plenty of surprises. G4ARI A slower pace reflecting the need for accurancy, but still great fun G4BVY Excellent timing - contest ended as Malaysian GP started ! G4BXT Surfaced, bleary eyed after a night session in the SPDX Test! Fortunately, ROPOCO very relaxed and enjoyable. First one I have ever entered. Looking forward to No. 2 SD worked a dream. G4CKH After the first 45 mins it was hard going. G4DDX High pylon noise here but the same score as last year. Bit slow in last hour. Enjoyed contest and still had time to go sailing afterwards. Used SD as usual which made logging so easy. G4DJX First entry for 22 years. Really enjoyed it. Used SD - worked nicely. G4EBK First hour FB second hour a bit thin on the ground. G4FAL It would be interesting to have some examples of the multiple postcode corruptions that occur during the contest - but omitting callsigns. It was good that some newer users of cw were prepared to have a go. G4FNL I got up an hour earlier than needed. (I forgot about the clock change!) The overall QSO rate was slow and I suspect that I have an aerial problem to fix. Thanks to all for the QSO's. It was fun swapping the various mutilated postcodes G4FUI Good fun as usual, good condx in first hour G4LMW Great fun. My first ROPOCO. Got my Postcode back pretty quickly. One odd code in particular was doing the rounds! G4OGB Steady stream until last 20 mins. SD worked fine. G4OOC Enjoyed this session very much SD performed faultlessly great help would recommend SD to all G4RCG 1st hour was good and then went to a snails pace wish a few more would get on to do this test, its one of the most fun tests in the calender, did not hear any novice calls at all which was disapointing. SD worked great as usual G4WGE Despite the contest reflector comment - this contest ain't broke and doesn't need fixing. In fact perfect timing this session. Finish the contest then watch the Malaysian Grand Prix.
