TROPHIES (+) Flight Refuelling Trophy - Leading team - Lichfield ARS Lichfield Trophy - Leading single-operator individual station - N Cawthorne, G3TXFCHECKLOGS:
ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS This year’s race for the AFS podium position was wide open. Whilst Lichfield ARS retain the number one spot again this year, the margin between them and Cray Valley RS ‘A’ was very small. Just 19 QSOs from over 1300 made by each team stood between them pre-adjudication, and this was reduced to 9 QSOs in the final standings. Most of the Cray Valley team had moved to alternative, more competitive locations as well this year, and this certainly seemed to pay off. A last minute fault with the amplifier Mark M0DXR was using forced him to run with 100 watts – with a bigger signal it’s quite likely CVRS would have been this year’s champions. Adding to the “if only…” fun are the Three A’s Contest Group in third place, who fielded a three man team. A modest fourth score would also quite likely have elevated them to the number one position. Looking at the individual scores, Nigel G3TXF is in first place, followed by Don G3BJ, and Ian G3WVG operating as G0AAA. Nigel and Callum M0MCX (in fourth place) were the only stations to claim over 400 QSOs this year, although they couldn’t quite reach last year’s record breaking totals. The adjudication of AFS SSB was more detailed than ever, thanks to using Mike G0GJV’s checking software. Logs were still acknowledged manually this year and I discovered AFS CW logs, last year’s logs, and several logs in the wrong format, or missing vital data such as serial numbers. Please double check entries for obvious errors before you send them in. The soapbox comments contain the usual mix of those happy with the event and their performance, whether they made 30 QSOs or 300, those enjoying the challenge of the high band occupancy, and some others who found it more of a “struggle”. Thanks to all 90 teams, 250+ entrants, and those sending checklogs for supporting the contest. Lee G0MTN SOAPBOX: 2E0JPJ Lots of stations on air. Thoroughly enjoyable. 2E0SEW Fun and gaining confidence in techniques DG4DW Nice short contest, we hear us again. G0AAA FT1000mp plus amp. and dipole at 70ft. G0AJJ Lots of activity and much QRM. Tnx to all who struggled to give me points! G0AOJ The bands was very active G0DMP Enjoyed the contest It was well mannered. Conditions seemed good but QRM and QSB later G0DVJ Good conditions - shorter skip early on vs CW leg. Very busy as usual G0EYO Busy contest but difficult to be heard G0EYR Great afternoon must do something about antennas! SD was good as ever G0GDU Ft1000 200w wid w3dzz centred @ 40 ft. One or two very wide signals G0GFQ Hard work!! G0HSA Had to put up with deliberate interference at the start. Battled on and eventually things got better. SD performed well as usual makes logging the contest a joy. Nice to see some good conditions for the contest G0MRH Propagation conditions were good for inter G. Conditions made bad with so many strong stations G0MTN Yikes. G0ROG First ever AFS G0UAI Kenwood TS50 (18dBW) + G5RV G0VDZ I do love the chaos of AFS. But I cannot get near the top guys. G0VJG Good contest G2BKZ Late starting, couldn't find a calling frequency, so hunt and pounce only. Good fun and 80 mtr dipole worked fine. Computer glitch, hence no s/n 068 G3JIR How about introducing a differential points system for QSO's make by calling CQ and those made by hunt-and-pounce. My scoring rate is around a quarter of that of the big-signal-monopolise-one-frequency stations. I do not think the present system adequately reflects the skill required to winkle-out stations from between the big hitters. Without the presence of the modestly equipped stations, the big-hitters could all work each other in the first 15 minutes and have nothing left to do for the remaining three and three-quarter hours. Please think about it. G3JJZ Rig - ic756 pro iii, 100w. Antennas - 85' lw G3KLH Great conditions but why is there so much splatter G3LDI NOT my favourite contest! G3LHJ/A Hard going with poor antenna and limited time & QRL with Foundation course at ATC HQ. G3LIK Conditions were quite good today. A lot of familiar callsigns missing from the log. A few strong signals that created splatter, especially when they moved near a frequency that was in use. Always great fun. G3MXH Managed a good rate at the early in the contest but eventually was unable to mantain the rate due to QRM on both sides. Lots of activity. G3NDJ SD is fine and band condx were good G3NFB Good contest on a very crowded band. G3OLB Conditions good all the way through. Nice contest! G3PHO Excellent band conditions. Had a great run for the first hour and then made the fatal mistake of going S&P!! Contact rate slowed down in third hour, only to pick up again for the last 60 minutes.Ended up with sore throat for next four days!! G3RRL Good contest with plenty of stations and good condition G3RSD Used "sd" worked perfectly G3TBK Very noisy, lots of very wide signals with splatter. G3TXF Great to see so much activity on 80m SSB on a Saturday afternoon! G3UFY RIG - FT1000MP + Ranger 811H. ANTENNAS - Dipole up 35'. Plagued by S9+20 noise all afternoon so couldn't CQ. Did what I could with S&P. G3VCA Started well but an emergency cropped up at work, and 1 hour only could be given to the contest. G3VIP Rig ic7000 - 30w - 40m lw homebrew logger. Big struggle with only 30watts. G3VYI Lots of QRM, QSB, hard work on the ears !! Skip long in last hour as expected G3WHK Lets be radical - How about having to QSY after every 10 QSOs G3WRR Lost 55 minutes due to S9+10dB noise. S&P for rest as home antenna is totally non competitive. Prefer the CW event. But at least SD did the business G3XSV Going strong for the first hour - 140 Qs - but then got a knock on the door from a neighbour about TVI. That put a stop to a competitive entry. Finished the contest S&Ping using QRP. Fixed the TVI problem the following day thankfully. G3YEC Had to S&P could not find a clear spot. Still too many using in excess of the legal limit. G3YHV Soapbox: got fed up after 1700 and stopped ! G3YOA Very noisy at times. Used SD as normal G3ZBU Plenty of activity. Great fun. G3ZGC Very difficult. 200w IC7700 to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft garden. G4BXT Conditions good with loud signals from all UK. Hard to find a spare slot for running. Pleased with my result considering the poor antenna G4CWH Conditions didn't fade this time, though continentals eventually pushed me off my perch and I never found another clear channel. SD faultless again. G4DDL Just playing at the end of the contest giving points to a few friends G4DDX Very crowded and hard to get a run at with only 100w and low antenna. Had my Freq taken twice but enjoyed the contest. Used SD as always G4DQP Band very noisy and busy after 1500hrs. the 570 showed it is not filtered for contest working, but very enjoya ble afternoon. With headset and better filters or better contest rig we may even double our score. G4EBK Don't know what went wrong this year, just couldn't get going. G4FAL My first outing in AFS SSB. Hard to find a frequency to run. G4FBS Good activity and good conditions. Some stations wanted a wide range of frequencies. Enjoyable contest nevertheless. SD logging program is excellent for these contests. G4NWJ Good contest G4VUD Quite good, just had a late start G4YTV Good contest which I enjoyed. SD did everything it says on the "label". The problem are the operators! I'm trying to get other club members to use say SDX at home so that they have a feel for it when they come to work in a contest. G6FOP Good fun G6UPR Just learning - will do better next time G7HNN Condx dreadful, high QRN and QRM. It's about time we use just 100watts output, at least those that use low power can hear stations instead of constant splatter from high power users. Lets put everyone on a LEVEL playing field the AFS events. G7PVZ Good fun. Wind started gusting very strongly here towards the end of the contest but my heath-robinson g5rv stayed aloft!!! Used the little Icom with 10 watts. Thanks to everyone. Nice to hear some M6's on. G7SKR Very crowded with QRM and splatter. A real squeeze. Just 20 mins calling CQ between QRM, the rest S&P. IC-7400 @ 100W to inv-V @ 9m. G7SOZ The format of this contest really needs to be changed to a sprint to level the playing field and prevent people sitting on the same frequency they were 'testing' on 2 hours before the contest. G8ALR Impossible to find a frequency on which to park so I went into wandering minstrel mode picking up points as I went along! G8FCQ Great Fun had one report From G4FNL shown in log @ 1656. Reduced power from 300 peak to 200 no more adverse reports. Started SD with band set on 20 mrs realised and changed to 80 result meant dupe chk errors Paul moding SD to set Default band to 80 for AFS G8FMJ/P Difficult at times due to some deliberate QRM from outside the UK,thanks to all who had to repeat for me, SD worked faultlessly. G8NRP Very noisey band conditions GM0ELP Sore throat, sore head. Started off with 56 noise ended with 59 noise. SSB contesting is the hardest for me followed by CW, with the easiest being data. I enjoyed it none the less. Thanks to everyone who worked me. GM0TQJ Last contest prior to leaving UK to live in VE6 GM3POI 80m does not work in Daylight except if you have close in Stations available. You should also have a QRP Section for Novice licencees only GM3VEY Great fun but wall to wall signals made it difficult GM3YEH Only operated for first 2 hours. Tough going at times. Had to lower aerials mid-contest due to gale force winds. GM4FAM Only a checklog. Sri could not be qrv for the whole 4 hours GM4OBD Struggled to get any replies even from stations calling CQ for extended periods. Must get wav.files to play through the F keys on SD GM4ZUK Band wall to wall - hard going - could run when we could get a clearish frequency but hard with 100w. GX4MWS First club attempt - interesting experience M0AAA Fantastic start for the first hour. Then 2 stations were taking it in turns to put key down and block all my weak signals. After about 1.5 hours had to QSY. Still when they were playing with me they were not upsetting anyone else. Then I was told I was opperating out of the RSGB contest section. I have taken off those points. M0AFJ Personal problems stopped me half way into the contest, Very busy band! M0ANM Conditions poor in Cheshire area, had to fight for every contact. M0CNP Good signals and plenty of stations to work. Good. Thanks everyone for the points M0DHO Very crowded band and lots of QRM. Good to see so much activity. M0FRH Enjoyed using SD. Good contest as always. Thanks to all who worked me. M0MBO Kenwood ts870s and vertical M0MCX Pretty good conditions to all parts of UK. Excellent run on last hour to lots of EU. 400w Horizontal 160m delta loop at 85 feet M0PTO Many thanks to G3PDH for the loan of the shack again this year. M0SCG Very good contest thoughly enjoyed by both of us. Stns were vy close together but no problem to work M0TIF Very enjoyable contest thanks to all organisers M0XDF Good Fun, even if it was a bit noisy. M0XIE Lots of QRM. Very much out of practice too! Disappointing score :( M1PTR The band was very crowded confirming the popularity of this contest. I achieved a good rate in the first hour slowing down as the skip extended after dark. Good to hear some new callsigns having a go. M3CEB My first contest on ssb with 10 Watts M3WYX Very hard contest. all round quite enjoyable if not slightly dissapointing M3XMI Paper log used and converted using SD. Clock threw a wobbly at about 1615 Will use SD in the future. Late start but enjoyed my first HF contest. M3XYC Need a better antenna. M3YOM New antenna gave a real improvement over last year, still tough as S&P though. M5ALG very noisey at this location. Only an hour from me M6KAH A very enjoyable contest and looking forward to more MM0CCC 2hrs S&P, Floppy Inv-L, 100w. Quite a slog. MM0GPZ S&P'd mostly for 1st 2 and a half hrs as any attempt to run was a waste of time. Managed a little run to bring the score a little bit respectibility in last hour or so. Mostly 59+ QRM the whole test :-( MM0ROV Managed to improve slightly on last year but found it hard going. MM0WNW I did this contest with my brand-new callsign. However, because of the gales and storm coming through, the tower was tilted over and the antenna propped a few feet above the ground! Perhaps my contacts will help make up for the fact that GM3JKS had a power outage for the last 35 minutes of the contest. MM6JPM First Contest, really enjoyed it. Can't believe MM6WEB got more contacts than me. Conditions didn't favour 10W. Picked up in last hour OE3DMA Sorry for the missing numbers, but HA-DX was at the same time.Didn't notice that I was giving points for two different contests. :-) |
