Club Calls Contest 2009 This contest remains a popular event in the RSGB contest calendar with a marked increase in the number of received logs (13 more than in 2008). There were over 40 active club stations, though some did not submit a log. Many clubs were clearly giving newcomers the opportunity to gain experience in contesting, which was great to hear. The soapbox comments showed that most stations (in particular the multi-op club entries) had a good time, despite the curry arriving late for one of the Jersey club stations.Despite a well publicised plea for consistency in log formats and especially the logged club name, very few managed to achieve this! Logs were also received in a variety of formats and several were received by post. This made adjudication a challenge. From the received logs it was obvious that some stations (particularly Club stations) were not consistent with their sent exchanges and leniency has been applied to the receiving station in these instances. In addition, one particular club clearly had 3 members giving a different variation on the club name so all logged versions were permitted. Considerable flexibility was also given with regard to variations in the recording of the club name. However, a “Society” logged as a “Club” was penalised as were careless spelling errors (“Boton” for “Bolton” and “Cabridge” for “Cambridge”). A “Club” recorded as a “Member” (or Vice Versa) also resulted in the loss of points. However, almost any spelling of “Refuelling” was allowed! The overall winner and leading club station was Verulum ARC who win the Ariel Trophy. Peter Hobbs, G3LET was the leading member station. The Hadley Wood Contest Group reclaim the David Hill G4IQM Memorial Trophy that they won in 2007. It was a good effort with 3 of their stations operating from alternative locations in order to comply with the 30-mile radius rule. There was also good membership participation from other clubs with 9 from Horsham and 8 from Shirehampton. Other clubs would have scored better but did not muster the 5 stations needed to post a good “team” score. It was good to see so many Club station entries and this remains the backbone of this event. Let’s hope its popularity continues to increase. Rob Thomson G4LMW SOAPBOX: 2E0UOGUsing 25ft vertical G0FPU First time club calls contest..Good fun SD used for logging calls..Filled details in later G0IDA Operated from Fernie Hill Farm, Hadley Wood, EN4 0PZ K3, dipole. G0OLE Turned inverted l into loop this year, still needed tuner in plastic carrier bag though, enjoyed contest again G0OUR IC7400, dipole G2DX ICOM-7400, Butternut vertical G2FJA IC756 Pro III Antenna 60feet sloper from shack to tree-top, fed against random wires on or just above ground: L-match power 15dBW. As they said at HFC 2008 - just do it and enjoy. Twice as good as last year!! G3LET Long skip in the last hour, or maybe clubs had closed early. Problems with a music jammer and someone who jumped in 1.5kHz off without listening and persisted for half an hour. Otherwise good, quiet conditions for once. G3LRS Rig: ts950sdx. ant: windom at 30ft great fun had by all... When's the next one? Sw: txt2cbrillo by la0fx ver 1.0 G3NFB 30Watts 90 Ft Doublet G3OFA Radio Kenwood with 30 Watts. ANTENNA Long wire G3SAD/P No top band antenna, just utilised my 80 mtr dipole. Good fun, but hard going. G3SNU TRIO 830 170 ft doublet G3TKF Interesting but very noisy band G3TLI Yaesu FT767GX, Dipole G3UFY Some truly remarkable signals around, considering the comparatively low power permitted. New tuned-loop receiving antenna took out enough of the noise to enable me to hear the rest as well! G3WOV Yaesu FT-840, Long Wire G3ZBU great fun! A very civilised contest, where, instead of an exchange of 59 14 QSL, it is: hello XXXXX, nice signals here, thanks for your report. I am a member of the XXXXX amateur radio club. It is nice to hear so many of you from YYYYY club on tonight. See you next time! QRZ contest etc. G3ZJG RIG Ic-7200 ANT 100 ft inverted 'L'at 15 ft. G4ARI Used SD after the contest then edited Cabrillo file It took nearly as long to do the log as the contest! G4CLA My first 160m contest from here so was very pleased with the results. G4EKT/A FT1000, Long Wire G4FBS Good to work familiar club calls again and a few new ones. Friendly contest SD logging program used post contest (General) G4FKA Steady rate throughout. Noise increased later in the period. G4LMW Great to hear many stations giving new operators experience in the contest G4OSB lots of noise on band today G4SJX Ft1000mp mark v field 160m dipole centre 50ft. Yet another great event, club station and some members on air, here's to 2010. sw: txt2cbrillo by la0fx ver 1.0 G4XBG Icom ic7400 marconi t G4ZCS Elecraft K3, PicaTune, Endfed wire @ 5 Metres AGL G6GVI Using IC735 into a vertical and end-fed wire from a small garden G6UW Thoroughly enjoyable contest for us, and by the sounds of things, most other people as well. Thanks all for playing! G7SKR Noisy, windy, much rain, QRN, some very weak signals. Mediocre performance from wind-swept homebrew vertical. G7SRA FT847, 1/2wave dipole at 30ft inv V down to 6ft at ends. Very windy. Activity seemed down from previous years. G7TWC Operated from Cuffley, Herts GC3XEJ Orion 2 - 32w, dipole at 55 feet GJ3IT Delayed start due to late arrival of curry! GM6NX 756 PRO 2, vertical antenna GX0BWC Using a vertical in a small garden. GX0RGH Good fun as usual Deliberate jamming by DL station in first hour GX1ONE ic 7000 , full sized dipole, first attempt at HF friendly contesting, thoroughly enjoyed it from Bolton Wireless Club GX3GWB Low level of band noise this year, and seemed to be much more activity from the south and midlands. GX3RAL TS570, Inverted Vee Dipole at 30 feet. Surprised to get a call from the Sala Radio Club in Sweden SK5CR. Sadly worth no points. GX3VER Station located at Phasel's Wood Scout Camp, Hemel Hempsted. Main station = FT1000 with dipole at 15m, surrounded by trees. Search RX = FT897 with long wire at about 8m, also in the trees. Must find a better location for next year - I think the trees take all the signal - nothing seemed very loud. Excellent fun and very interesting to compare performance with the other CLUB station as we know each other's capabilities. Many thanks to all the organisers and adjudicators. GX4STV Operated from G7TWC's QTH in N London GX5XV We had planned to go to G3LLK's QTH but the strong winds stopped that. S9+10 noise level at home so no chance of CQing. I hope we have better luck next year. I had to use my 40m vertical to hear stations and transmit on the 132 ft bent wire. GX8VER TXVR = IC756P2 95m doublet at 8m AGL. Search RX = IC7000 on dipole at 7m AGL 90deg to above. Enjoyable multi-operator and two club stations this year. We hope we did not cause too much confusion! We must find a better way to log this contest. Thanks to the organisers. M0AWX IC735 into inverted-L at 75ft. M0CHK Noticable lack of activity. The band was quite very unusual. Still a good contest. M0CZR Kenwood TS570, Long Wire. Good exchange M0DJW Operated from Ware Park Farm, Herts M0KEL First time that I have entered this contest. It was nice to work a few familiar callsigns. M0LUV Excellent fun M0RHS TS2000, dipole M0SIY Thanks to other members of the club for helping ( logging aerials etc ) icom ic 7400 plus dipoles one east/west one north/south M0XXT Don't what ever you do, ask for a repeat of the last letter only! M1EBV Aerial fell down before and during so a bit of a washout M5ARC/P FT1000 MK5 Field, Vee Dipole. Well down on last year, new site, local noise, QRM & lower antenna due to wind all conspired against us! MX0AAA very friendly contest MX0HWC Hard to understand why some CLUB stations did not use special prefix |
