The full writeup for 2010 together with a vast amount of background information, statistics and photographs related to the Commonwealth Contest may be found at www.beru.org.uk Check logs are gratefully acknowledged from 5B4AGQ 9M2CNC G3GMM G3RWL G3VQO G3XMM G3XQX G4BYG G4VSS GM0AXY GM4ZUK MM0GPZ VE7YL VU2NKS SOAPBOX: 3B9WR Pity I had a stomach bug on Friday and had to quit 1730z ish on Saturday so made a short contest. 4S7NI A good contest try to improve next year. 5B4AGN One of Team Asia. Great fun as always but having only just returned from a month travelling only limited time available. Good to see the propagation gods making a special effort for the weekend. My sincere thanks to the organisers for their commitment to preserving the character of this unique event. 5X1NH Fun but hard going-condx no better than average Mains power all contest - a unique miracle! 80M - all that antenna and static grief for 19 QSOs Atlantic proved difficult to cross 10M - weird very short bursts mainly useless 9G5XA Equipment was a K2/100 and an AL-811H borrowed from the local club. Aerials comprised a home made Moxon 2 element yagi for 20+15 plus a doublet fed with slotted ribbon for 40+10 and with the ribbon #strapped for 80. Propagation was good on 20+15 although nothing was heard from VK/ZL. 10M never opened. LF propagation was OK but the bands were very noisy probably due to storms to the north of Accra. 9H1CG My first QRP entry in Beru - had a great time - amazing QRP QSOs. My last good bash at BERU was in 1974 - placed 5th overall. FT817ND barefoot 5 w + half size G5RV + pen & paper 9J2BO IC746 + L4B; 3-ele tribander, 7MHz sloper,3.5MHz Inv Vee 9M2ADX I'm very enjoy 15m band with new solar cycle 9M2CNC Pleased to see 10m open to the UK! 9M6XRO My Rig: Transceiver Ten-Tec Omni VI and Icom IC-PW1 Linear @ 400w Antennas (HF) Cushcraft A4S (LF) 40/80m Inverted Vee 9V1UV poor propagation conditions C4Z Long awaited improvement in band cndx brought about much more activity, there was a great turnout. Very frustrating on 40/80 Saturday evening trying to get to those vk/zl stns and beaten every time by uk callers, was it a chordal hop thing or just that my 100w and basic antennas don't hack it down there? Add to that the bottom 10khz Police on 80 gave me a hard time. Thanks for perserverence go to Mike, G3IAF, we made it after about the sixth attempt through the jammers. I really don't recall hearing that Ukraine contest on 80m before but it sure was busy and went on until the small hours here. First bounce very strong sigs from them made the band unusable everywhere above 3510khz. It was great fun Sun am moving all those vk/zl/vu/9m6 guys all bands 14 through 28, thanks fellers.(I was calling you John (xro)on 40 & 80 but couldn't make it) Great job by Chris at GB5CC - he was everywhere. Very frustrating on Sun am on 40m to hear at least two ve7's calling cq and working one Russian after another. Roll on 2011! Eqp't. TS 570 - 100w. 3 ele yagi up 50' 40m - inverted vee up 50' 80m - end fed half sloper. G0FYX Reasonable band condx. Always enjoyable. Nice to be able to work the DX fairly easily. SDC logging program was used post-contest. Thanks to those who travelled and who picked me out. G0HVQ Equip - Icom IC7400 100W Hustler 4BTV Vert Cushcraft MA8040 Vert for 80m. Great condx on the higher bands surprised to work 2 x VKs on 10m with my small setup lower bands poorer than the last 2 years. Suffered antenna failure on 15m on Sun morning which resulted in me missing some DX. Great fun as usual will be back next year. Please keep the 12hr category for those of us with families. G0IBN Sd was great enjoyable time with good dx but qrn was very heavy on lower bands vk and zl came belting in on 10m sunday morning G0MTN Very little time and very little antenna but enjoyed S+P for DX BERU stations. G0ORH Great opening to VK plus V51 VQ9 on 10m early on Sunday morning I think that caught some op's out! After all this time Beru has been running still a few IZ SP's call the DX I guess out of sheer frustration. With all those VK and ZL's showing on 40 & 80m who could blame them!!! Ran K3 SPE amp. tri-bander & 40/80m dipole at 55ft. The only fly in the ointment my limited antenna's. G0VDZ much better this year. Even found a couple of vk's on 10m G2JL I enjoyed it (SD) as much as the contest ! G3GLL Better conditions this year except for the local QRN on the low bands. Had to miss the last two hours Nice to hear the old hands again ! G3IAF Conditions suddenly went up for weekend - lovely. G3JJZ Very sorry to have missed the short 10m opening!! Otherwise an enjoyable contest. SDC worked well again.(Thanks, Paul!) G3JRM Just had a little dabble on saturday to enjoy working some very ( for me) nice DX split between 21/14 mhz no propagation on 28mhz .some terrific signals heard here G3KKP For me the best contest in the various calendars. Used SD for logging and worked perfectly for me as usual. Thanks to the travelling fraternity. who greatly add to the interest. G3KMA Glad conditions were better than last year. The Sunday morning 10m opening was a welcome surprise. G3KMY FT900AT + G5RV Nice to see familiar callsigns out in force. Always good to hear so many Canadian stations - they can always be relied on to provide a good turnout. G3LDI Could only spare 10 minutes this weekend. G3LET Much improved HF conditions at the expense of 80m but still a long way to go. I persisted too long chasing VQ9LA on 10m and seem to have missed a load. Tough going in the Restricted section very few responses to general CQs but targeted ones were quite successful. G3LHJ Much beter condxs this year although Sunday morning was a bit of a struggle - 15M Sat PM was great & Joe 7Q7BP gave me my only 10M Qso. G3LIK Seemed to be a lot more areas active this year. Some reasonable conditions too pity more did not go to 10m more often. Nice to see a lot of familiar calls. G3LUW Much improving conditions G3LVP TS850 + HB amp 2 X 4CX250B 400W 2el tribander @30ft + 80/40 Inverted V trap dipole. Cndx poor G3MPB Good conditions this year G3NFB QRP - 5W : Ant - 30M Doublet 12M Up G3OAY 400w to a butternut hf6v is not a competitive set up but very enjoyable especially catching the ten metre opening on sunday morning G3OLB Just a casual dabble to work some DX! G3PHO Most enjoyable contest! I almost doubled my last year's score in spite of still having the poor LF antenna system (inverted V 100ft doublet). Conditions were very good on 15 and 20 with hours of VKs and Far East stations. Often worked them with just 40 watts while keeping the linear tuned to another band to save time! 10m had a fine opening to VK3/VK6 on Sunday morning. Not heard so many VK6 for a long time! Was delighted to work VP2MCC & J38CW on all bands 80 -15 metres as they are both local Sheffield ops G4FAL & G3VCQ. Both had outstanding signals on all bands. 80m was good into Caribbean overnight but disappointing to ZL unlike 40m. Station details: FT950 + Acom 1010 + A3S tribander and 100ft invereted V doublet @ 32ft apex. Wintest worked superbly as usual. G3PSM An improvement with 15 metres open for far longer than last year. More work to do on the antennas though! G3RFH Conditions seemed pretty good. Was very pleased to work VK and VQ9 on ten metres on Sunday morning.Very enjoyable and looking forward to the next one. G3RIK First time in BERU. Great to work DX without EU fallout. G3RLE ICOM 956 PRO111 30m & 55m doublets, 40m dipole @ 13m G3RSD Condx were much better than anticipated G3RXQ My first BERU - nice relaxing contest. Will enter again... K3/100 SPE 1K-FA Doublet SmallIr G3SJJ Too much speeding up of canned messages. It spoils the rhythm of the CW and it is not helpful to anyone. G3SJX Just came on to check out new PC setup and give away a few points. Enjoyable as always. G3SVD Amazing difference a very sunspots makes. I was only able to spend occasional minutes in the shack for a total of 31/2 hours and ended with 77 QSOs. I was not able to make any contacts on 80m but did on the other contest bands. G3TEV Kenwood TS850SAT + Homebrew Amp - 400W 132' Inverted Vee up 8m G3TKK FT1000MP 400W linear 3ele A3S yagi at 35 feet with 40 and 80 Metre dipoles G3TXF Great to see this contest go from strength to strength with increased Commonwealth participation, the creation of the Teams and the continued support of the BERU Travellers. G3UFY RIG - FT1000MP + Ranger 811H ANTENNAS - Marconi Loops + Tribander G3VKW A very friendly contest G3VMY No 10m but good otherwise. Local tvqrm at s6-9 all the time. G3VPW Great fun again decided to manage time better and go for the 12 hour category. Search and pounce. 3B8CF was giving everyone 559K and no sign of John 3B9WR although wkd him on 40m earlier. G3VYI Band conditions open to VK/ZL/VE much better this year Thanks to the expeditions especially Africa. First time in 24hrs managed about 17 !! All band vertical a great help this year. G3WRR My best ever result in BERU - conditions seem to be picking up at last. Still a surprising number of countries (including the USA) seem to think they are part of the Commonwealth. Was tempted to tell one W that if they hadn't made a bad decision in 1776 they could have legitimately taken part.....but thought better of it. G3WW Just a few hours on 40 (with packet) looking for 5B-CCC slots. G3XYF Best contest of the year. Delighted 15m & 10m were open G3YBY First time casual entry but great fun! G3YEC CONDX good this QTH. Operating hours this year cut extremely short. Nice to hear old friends G3YMC An enjoyable contest. Conditions still a bit patchy and it was a struggle to work the DX at times on QRP. Although some reported VKs on 10m nothing was heard here at all on that band. But certainly nice to hear some good Caribbean and African stations. G3YYD Nice to work so much DX in so few hours without the EU Zoo. G3ZGC Tried to run 100w but conditions not good enough for that so 200w it was! Rig IC7700 80m 132 ft wire up 40 ft wrapped into 55 ft garden. 40/20 half size G5RV. 15m dipole built 5 minutes before the contest! Nothing heard on 10m! 15m dipole wrecked the PC logging with RF! I should have tested it before! Also PC logged wrong band on Cabrillo so manual adjust after! Mainly search and pounced. Not so good for me to ZL on 80m this year but otherwise only 2 gotaways 9V1 and VU2. I dont consider that too bad for my meagre antenna farm(more like glorified washing lines) G3ZHE Rig IC 7700 with 100 watts output. Ant 90ft Doublet 30 ft up. running East/West. 300 ohm ribbon feed to a KW Z Match atu. G3ZQH Great contest format for low power and simple antennas! Even the rare DX stations were workable. Amazing opening to VK on 10m right at the end. Only my 2nd BERU but will definitely be back next year. G4AMT Wow ! good VK6 opening on 10m on Sunday morning. Decent conditions with good sigs from VK and ZL through out our daylight hours. Clearly vast majority using cluster - time for rule change. G4ARI Great Fun. Didn't hear many ZLs or VKs on 80 but nice to have 10 metres open occasionally G4BUO First time that I can remember not doing a full entry. Quite nice to take a more relaxed approach but I hope to be back in earnest next year! Conditions definitely showing signs of improvement. 15m was good and even a handful of QSOs on 10m including VP8NO a genuine S9 signal when we QSYed though when I heard him 40 minutes earlier he was in the noise and couldn't hear me. Happy to make just over 200 Qs in 8 hours operation G4BYG Due to health problems not able to enter many qso,s this year. Hopefully back fit for the next one. G4CKH enjoyed short operating times with plenty of good dx about G4CWH Despite knowledge of the various team stations some were very audible but others not at all. Noise floors sometimes a problem as were pesky QRMers. Weak VKs on 10m a nice surprise Sunday morning. SD perfect. G4DBW Elecraft K3 100 watts rotary dipole VK and ZL on 20m! VK and ZS on 21MHz ! The sunspot cycle must be coming out of a minima ? G4DDX I enjoyed Beru the bands are certainly getting better. ans it is nice to work the DX without the high power continentals!! I used SD as usual with no problems. G4DJX Enjoyed giving out some points G4EBK Did better than last year but always a struggle with 100 watts and low dipoles. G4FKA Conditions generally much improved this year particularly 21 and no nasty noises blocking the bands! Staying awake for the 80m ZLs at dawn was an achievement. Opening on 28 to VK a real bonus on Sunday morning; long may it continue! It is always a pleasure to work this contest. G4FSU Good conditions - welcome back the sunspots. It's been a while since I've had VK in the log on 28MHz! G4HHJ My first entry in Beru and then only found it by accident hence very limited operating time. I don't expect to go anywhere with this entry but it may help the adjudication. I'll try harder next year. Equipment - FT847 100W via ATU to inverted-L at about 9m agl 1/4wave on 3.5MHz. G4HSO Managed to grab a few minutes to give some points away. I hope to be back with more time next year. TU all. G4IUF Variable conditions Sat best G4KNO TenTec Orion 80/40m trapped vertical 20m sloping dipole. After realising that last year's checklog wouldn't have been at the bottom of the table I thought I'd actually enter this year! G4LWB Limited time but enjoyable G4PIQ Only able to grab a couple of hours here and there this weekend. Sent #57 twice when computer re-booted mid QSO. K2/100 + PA 400W. 80m / 40m inv-V dipoles @ 14m G4RCD Enjoyable contest with plenty of nice DX. Very time-limited effort with less than 4 hours on the air - all fitted around family stuff after new junior op Nathan was born a week before the contest! G4RCG Great Fun, really enjoyed the time I was on, some really big signals on all the bands. Good to see 10m open up to VK G4RYV second year entry a few more contacts this time Used the logging software by EI5DI very good program G4WGE/P The Gentlemanly contest. Unhurried, relaxed and no European Zoo. Always a good source of DXCC Challenge credits. Decided to go /p. Having transported a full car load of equipment to the West Country and back I have to be amazed at how people transport stations around the world staying within airline weight and size limits. G4XPE Limited time due to domestic commitments G4YTV First time with this contest. It was very noticeable that everyone behaved themselves it made it a pleasure to operate. G6CSY Forgot it ended at 1000 and not 1200 ! Running IC7400 @ 5W and a trap vertical. Software from DXLab Suite. THREE ALL-TIME-NEW DXCC's worked - 5H3 9G5 and J6. Also VK2 for new band/mode. Not bad for the QRP... G6PZ What a blast! Conditions were up on 15 especially and with thanks to the kind hospitality of Paul I probably had the best contest station in the UK to play with! Paul even wound up the towers for me before going to work on Saturday. With hospit ality like that all I have to do is find the cheapest Easyjet fare from Belfast to Bristol. Activity in BERU is going up and up with ever more stations in rare call areas QRV and plenty of stations in Africa and the Caribbean with origins outside the Comm onwealth giving this one a serious go. Particular thanks to the Indian team for giving BERU such a shot in the arm. When 10 comes back 500 QSOs from the UK are possible. The Golden Age of the Commonwealth Contest is only just beginning! Station - stacked SteppIRs at 20m and 10m agl for 10/15/20 MonstIR at 23m agl4-square on 80. G7TMU Radio: Icom IC-706mk2G running 100 watts Antenna: Loft mounted half-size G5RV + LDG AT-100 Pro Auto ATU Contest logging software: Homebrew written in VB6 accessing K1EL WinKey CW keyer Spotting nets: None used Thanks for running the contest my CW's not good but great fun anyway and worked a couple of new countries! G8JXV MO with CWSkimmer assistance G8MIA Higher bands were good this year with equal number of contacts on 15m and 20m. Worked just about all the stations I could hear. Entered MO as used CWSkimmer to read the CW. GB5CC Great contest as always - great to work stations on 10m especially. GI4BQI IC756PRO-III + 150ft doublet up 35ft GM0AXY My first try at BERU; used N1MM for the first time in any CW contest. I should have done some more practise runs prior to the contest; maybe next year! GM0ELP K3 and dipoles at 40ft (no wind) only active on 20/15/10 Highlight was VK on 10m :-) Thanks to all who worked me GM3CFS 80m not too good other bandsfair to good GM3POI MUF nearly high enough for a good score GM3SEK As usual it felt like hard work during the contest but very satisfying to look back on. Highlights were the new 80m antenna and the 10m opening on Sunday morning to VK6 VQ9 and Africa. GM3TAL/P Great contest. Only 20 watts available from one car bat GM3YEH IC751A 40m vertical. GM4AFF I am truly an idiot. I miscalculated my operating time and ended up going over the 12 hours. Didn't see the error until I done 12:47. So here's my 24 hours entry... GM4FAM The 10m opening really livened up a normally slow last session. GM4SID Great to work so many VK and ZL and VE7 stns again. Only part time due to other committments SDC Ran perfectly right through. Great software. GM4UBJ Squeezed this one in again as I had to work..same as las t year to tired to do a night stint. Thanks to all maybe next year I will get more time in.Condx good as I even worked VK2BJ GM4YLN contest was good worked lots of DX with my 5 watts QRP there was not much QRM from none beru countries when calling the DX stations and made it easy to work them GM4ZUK First time QRV for BERU Enjoyed working the DX GW0ETF Decided to stick out the whole 24 hours as good training...very slow at times in the second half. Huge gaps between contacts later on and only the possibility of another interesting callsign hitting the log kept me going. Decent conditions and a great selection of exotic stations on the air. K3/Acom 1000 and a 100ft doublet at 30ft height. J38CW Great WX and Great band conditions really enjoyed this one this time just a dead time between 3-5am when the bands down here seem to die. No sign of that early morning opeining on 10m at this end! J6/G3PJT QTH Cap Estate. Rig K3 100w ant 80m inv L 40m GP and HF vertical doublet Asus eeePC with Win-Test Team Rest of the World J88DR IC-7000 PLUS ANTIQUE SB200 Linear About 400w. A3S at 30 feet 80m & 40m Dipoles at 30 feet R8 Vertical Logged on N1MM latest Revision with BERU support - great to have score appear automaticaaly in previous years I've used N1MM and scored manually after event. Flawless as usual. Lost an hour early on when Police came to investigate robbery which occurred just before the start. Not best prep for a Contest to lose watch wallet plastic cards.... Some problems with non-BERU callers but most not as persistant as usual. Did make it hard to pick put calls in pile-ups though Great event probably return to J8 again next year (if XYL signs the pass-out...) Sorry to not hear many of the Indian stations - nor 3B9WR - not a lot from Africa M0CEF Broke in a recently repaired rig. Some VK contacts after all. Heard some more stations closer to home who did not hear me. M0CNP Another challenging contest with the poor sunspots making propogation difficult but nevertheless a most enjoyable and gentlemanly contest. Long may it survive M0JCM First time I've done this competition. Very good fun and more relaxed than other contests. Only operated for a short time for fun from 16:00 to 19:00 UTC. M0RYB ICOM 756 PRO3 at 100W; dipoles for 80m & 40m 4-el beam for the rest. Couldnt read CW for toffee on Saturday so thanks for all your patience! Great contest thanks to all. M1KTA Started off bit of a disaster as tried to be too clever, day before lost antenna supports after building a Sterba Curtain for 15m/10m This meant dipole centre ended up just 16ft agl so moved out of qrp and into restricted. 12 hour and exceeded personal goal and beat qso number from 2009 as managed to equal the qso total last year before dinner 1st day and seem to have doubled score (will see how adjudication changes that) overall. Lots of VE and VK's on the bands. This year as last used an SDR RX which meant I could 'see' the activity before tuning to it. Portable MP3 player replayed slowly helped me with those really fast callsigns! M6FBK Second year entry and thanks to all operators for kind help. Thanks too to Paul - SDC used post-contest and indeed Super. Operated for 10 of my planned 12 only - MD0CCE Great to hear the 10-meter opening to VK6 5B and Africa in the last hour or so of the contest. 80m seemed tough to the east but easier to the west. Lots of non-Commonwealth callers and quite a few Gs! Good fun - thanks all! MI0CLP First attempt and enjoyed it greatly. I will be back next year with more time! MJ0ASP My first entry in Comonwealth contest (part time). See you next year ! MM0BQI Great fun. Some fantastic DX about, surprised more UK operators don't take advantage of this brilliant opportunity! Thanks to all the travellers, managed to work quite a few. MM0GPZ Checklog. Strictly part time as I was working Sat/Sun. MW0IDX casual S&P. SDC for logging P3J A most enjoyable contest again with lots of HF activity. It was unexpected and fantastic to have more QSOs on 15m than on 40m. There was a great opening on 10m on Sunday morning to VK2/4/6. 40/80 were tough this year. Nice to see all the Indian participants. Thanks to the organisers/adjudicators for a great contest. I'll be back next year. V51YJ Lost several hours operation during the night due to a thunderstorm. 80m hopeless due to S9+ QRN. Very pleased to work so many UK stations this year. FT-2000 running 100W; Hygain Patriot Vertical for 40-10m; Inverted Vee for 80m. VA1MM 15m opened to give me my first VU in a contest followed by a 5H3! VA3RAC Great activity. Best BERU in recent years. VA3RKM K2, QRP 5 watts, verticals. Thanks for working a small signal. I can usually count on working VK and ZL with my wire vertical in the garden and this year was no exception (7 Qs). It's great to renew acquaintance with the various Commonwealth countries around the globe. VA7MM Equipment - ICOM IC-746 at 100 W Output Antenna - multi-band dipole VE1ZAC Fun contest, 1st time for me. Some good DX on today. One new country for me. VE2AEJ Refreshingly good propagation conditions VE3EJ Hurray for 15 this year. With luck 10 will shine too next year. VE3EZP Dble Zepp 172 ft; High winds needed 1 hour plus for ant repair then lost another four to complete Hydro power l oss (wind again!)- high general noise/QRN levels kept m e hopping but then "its BERU" so SNAFU word of the day! As always - next year it will be different hopefully VE3FH Kenwood TS-940SAT 100W. Cushcraft R5 vertical 20-10 Dipoles 80 and 40 VE3FU Thanks for another great contest! As many others have stated, this was my best score. Already looking forward to next year. VE3IGJ Kenwood TS-2000 100W 20-m dipole and 80-m dipole. VE3MIA My first time in this contest - didn't have much time but liked it very much. Also I felt 'special' and now I know how those guys feel on their private golf courses... ha ha ha VE3OI Gentlemen, once again a great contest experience. Thanks for organizing. You are doing a great job, and we all appreciate your efforts! VE3RER Great contest for Canadians VE3UZ DX Cluster used here. VE3VHB Bad QRN at start of contest made 80M a challenge. Huge signal from 9M6XRO on 20M. Managed TWO QSOs on 10M! Big LP sigs from VK7GN and VK3TDX in our afternoon, pity no other VK/ZL there. Even got a number from ZK3OU. Noticed a lot of new (for CC) calls encouraging. VE4EAR Just a casual entry. great to work some of the rarer DX. VE4YU SD was very good after I got familiar with it. My time was limited and I missed the morning opening. VE5CPU A few hours of fun but not much of a score hi...hi. VE6TL Conditions to Europe on Saturday morning were quite good for a little while, so I managed a decent run. It is always a bit discouraging to turn on the radio first thing in the morning and hear the VE3s with over 300 Qs before even starting. I heard VE6JY (on all the bands) making a real effort so I'm sure he'll be in the thick of things. Managed a few exotic DX Qs so had some fun too. See you all next time. And by the way, I think N1MM logging software was out to lunch. It kept assigning 25 points almost randomly, so I'm sure my score should be quite a bit lower. VE7BGP I had a lot of fun Paricipating in this Contest. Wow this was great you did not have to compete with Stars & Stripes! To work some good ones in the Commonwealth. This gave me a great opportunity to work the Fakland Islands easily with my oldie FT-757GX barefoot. Thanks for giving us an Opportunity to Contest without the Yankee QRM! VE7BQO I enjoyed the contest very much; thank you for organising it. For the first time I used computer logging in the contest and once I got used to it SDC worked very well for me. VE7RAC Condx better than last year but still a long way to go! VE7XF I didn't read the rules carefully enough, so Here I am as a multi-op! VK2BJ Conditions good particularly 20m but 10 disappointing VK2EL FT897 100W. Antenna 1.5m magnetic loop mounted on balcony. Most enjoyable contest of them all. Wonderful spirit great to be able to contact old DX friends espite move to retirement village! VK2GR FT897D and wire inverted-vee antennas at 10 metres VK2NU Very limited entry due to work commitments at the last minute.. Must try better next year!! VK3IO Good fun great activity great operators VK3TDX Nice to see a short 10M opening to UK. VK3VT First time in this contest - had a bit of fun and worked a few. VK4BUI Sd for logging why try any other ? Band condx good at start but went for a fizz later on VK4EMM Many thanks to contest committee for another great event. The teams add an interesting dimension. Band conditions are improving on 15m and 10m. VK4WIA G'day to all other Ops in BERU. Used SD Programme by EI5DI worked very FB VK4XA Sorry unable to submit typed log for the first time. Aged 97 on 21/04/10 & hands packed up. Only my 64-year-old bug enabled me to make these few QSOs. TS830 - 80W. Zepp for 3.5 & 7MHz. 3-ele Tribander. VK6AJ FT2000 (100W) Log Periodic + 7MHz Dipole VK6BN Condx better than last year. Particularly 15 and 10m Inadvertantly used an earlier version of SDC. Problems with log sorted out by Paul EI5DI. Many thanks Need gain antennas for 15/10m. 80m to G disapointing SR VK6DXI My first entry in this contest. 10m band opened nicely bringing hope for coming months and years. VK6HG Great contest, conditions on the improve, must do better next year .. VK6LW HF Condx up on last year good to get some openings on 10m. Most enjoyable. Antennas 80m delta loop and Vee beams. VK7GN Was only able to be on for a few hours but tried to give out the vk7 mult whenver I could get into the shack! VO1TA Always enjoy this contest, Thanks again to the organizers. Keep up the good work VP2MCC A great trip to Montserrat and a very enjoyable Commonwealth Contest. I operated from a lovely apartment at Gingerbread Hill which has a 60 foot Rohn Tower belonging to George K2DM which I was kindly allowed to use. Contest highlights included: an unexpected opening on 15m when I worked VU2PTT over the South Pole (thanks Prasad) having several 5 band contacts being visited by a beautiful parrot during the day and simply enjoying the improved HF conditions - what a great hobby! Other special moments during the trip were: snorkeling with a turtle getting close-up to one of the most active volcanoes in the world gate-crashing the Governor's St Patrick's Day reception and running pile-ups outside the contest. My rig was an FT897 with an HL-1.1Kfx amplifier running 600W to a Mosley CL-33 tribander and 80m and 40m dipoles. Unfortunately the extra aerial gain and RF power showed up the deficiencies of the radio's CW waveform that had not been commented on previously - despite tests in Sheffield before the trip. Also again the receiver struggled a little to cope with pile-ups - but a generous 2-3KHz spread overcame this! VP8NO Once again SDC did it's stuff without effort. Much better conditions than last time. The usual problem with non-commonwealth stations calling. VU2BGS It was good to work many G stns The low bands Poor Band Condx VU2CDP My first BERU and it was a lot of fun. Score could have been better but for the noise. Tnx to everyone and CU next year. VU2PAI I could not be fully active due to social commitments but a great contest neverteheless! see you guys next year. VU2PTT Conditions were very good compared to last year. At one point I could hear and work VE on 40, 20 & 15m at the same time. Not always does this happen. 15 was open to VE-land for hours. 20 was not as good as last year with some additional QRN as well. 40 could have been better and I definitely need to improve RX capability on 80m. Maybe a bigge rscore next year :) Highlight was a long path QSO my afternoon with VP2MCC - that was mind boggling, thanks Nick :) Thanks to all for the wonderful QSOs and also to my team mates of Team Asia for putting in a great effort. See you all next year. VU2RMS One of Team Asia. First time in BERU. VU2UR our second attempt to be in a group. We have enjoyed the contest as ever. Ts-140s; 50 w; inverted vee antenna for multi bands. ZB2EO Member of Rest of the World team TRX 100W - half G5RV ZC4LI Thanks to all concerned in running the contest. ZL1AZE I was pleased to find that my 2010 claimed score of 6145 points is well up on the 4705 points achieved in 2009. The improvement seems to be attributable to three factors. Firstly conditions on the higher bands were noticeably better this year including some QSOs with VK and VE on 10M. Secondly I learnt my lesson from 2009 and made a point of checking that the computer logging was functioning properly well before the start of the contest! Thirdly I used a terminated receiving loop this year to help null the high level of local man made QRN that plaques my city QTH. The receiving loop allowed me to dig out many weaker signals on 80M and 40M that were impossible to copy on the TX antenna. The local QRN also raises the noise floor on the higher bands and made it difficult for me to copy weaker signals below about S2 or S3 on these bands. I appreciated the patience of callers who often had to send repeat information and apologise to others whom I was unable to dig out of the QRN. Overall the contest arrangements worked well for me this year but there were still a few unplanned events! An unusually strong southerly storm with winds in excess of 130 km per hour blasted our QTH on the Friday evening before the contest and damaged the 80M dipole antenna. Fortunately I was able to repair this in much calmer weather on Saturday. Shortly after the start of the contest I also discovered problems with RFI causing erratic computer generated keying. Adding ferrites did not help much so I eventually solved this problem by rebuilding the layout of the shack and moving the computer to a location further away from the antenna coax cables. I do apologise to those who were wondering about my poor CW sending skills at the start of the contest! The only station African station worked was VQ9LA on 20M. I heard 9J2BO on 40M at around 0445z but unfortunately there was too much QRM from non-BERU callers to allow a QSO! Equipment : FT1000MP (Mk V Field) + AL80A amp ZL1IE ICOM 725 & 80m dipole ZL1T Better condx this year.Great to be called by V51YJ and many others from exotic locations. ZL2BR Things are definitely on the up. My best Beru score yet. Conditions on the higher bands were a real improvement over recent years. With bonus points being the name of the game, did not spend too much time battling the noise on 80m after working the obligatory three G stations plus all the ZL and VK stations that were around. 15m was in reasonable shape especially to VE, worked more VE stations on this band than any other. In the other direction 15m only opened as far as VU. 10m was also open but only as far as VE7 and China. Heard a couple BD CW signals plus heaps of the usual Chinese FM CB signals. As usual no Africans were worked except 3B9WR who is really in the Indian Ocean rather than Africa, so was good copy on 40m SP. Did hear an extremely weak ZS6KR? on 20m LP, but he couldn't hear me. 40m was my best all round band. Worked more G's on this band than 20m. My elevated 40m GP does a decent job as a radiator, but is very noisy on receive, but using a 40m dipole for receive only made it much easier to hear the weak signals. This dipole is only about 6m high, tried it much higher but it was as noisy as the GP then. No technical problems, except for a few times every now and then the SWR would shoot up on 20m, maybe one of tribander traps was frying. There were some really good signals around including VE3EJ, VX3AT and VP2MCC who seemed to be everywhere all the time. ZL participation was very much down on last year. By my reckoning only 12 ZL's were active compared with 20 last year. ZL2FN IC-7400 100 watts. Buddipole on the balcony ZL3GA My first time in BERU tough work but great fun! 100W no filters and low dipoles :-( FT-707 W-8010 dipole up 8m ZL3IO My first BERU and I hope you can use the file to get a result as my program does not support this contest ZL3PAH My first entry in BERU - it was great even with limited time and bands. Will be back next year. K3 Expert 1K-FA end fed wire ZL3TE This was my second BERU with Team New Zealand. Installing the 40M Inverted VEE on the back deck helped this year work a few more Gs, along with having more time available. ZM4G Great fun! Condx were reasonable on all bar 10m and activity seemed quite high. Propagation didn't favour Africa again this year - I guess we need more sunspots to work the more far-flung parts of the Commonwealth or some help from DXcluster to find them. Being called by 3B9WR on two bands was a fantastic buzz and I was so shocked to receive G3TXF without some exotic prefix that I had to ask Nigel for a repeat. I was harder on the non-Commonwealth callers this year but still there are a few left in the log to show the correct serial numbers I sent. I hope the HFCC checking program will just ignore them as indeed I tried to do! Equipment here was a K3 with amp running 500 watts to a tribander or wires. ZS4JAN Bands was beter than last year. Hope this improves even better next year. See you all in BERU 2011. Thank you BERU commitee. ZS6BB Used cluster so had to change to MULTI-OP. I was SINGLE-OP (Assisted) Low power. ZS6KR Did a full 24hr contest but it's tough going from ZS SDC logger is tops |
