October 432MHz-248GHz UHF Contest Results 2009

For the second year running, poor weather made operating & station building very difficult for portable entrants. Entry level was slightly up on recent years & is actually the highest for over 10 years. Conditions were generally reported as being poor but M1CRO/P (JO01) did manage to work 3 different Spanish stations on 70cm with their best DX at 1033km. The best DX on 23cm was by G3CKR/P (IO93) working into JO50 at 917km even on their yagi which snapped in two pieces due to the strong winds.

Congratulations go to overall Single Operator section winner John Quarmby G3XDY & Open section winners, Colchester Contest Group of Colchester Radio Amateurs. Both were very clear winners by a substantial margin. Congratulations also go to runners up Jeremy Butt G0JJG & South Birmingham RS & also to all band leaders, runners-up & other certificate winners.

Comments from the logs:
G0BWC/P
23cm: Sunny (for once!) and mild, with light breeze, but rain showers seen to the South. Did hear G4RFR/P for a while, but didn't manage a QSO with them.
G0GWI
70cm: Only one station worked, only hear 2 others on the band in 4 hours, too weak didn't bother calling them.
G0JJG
70cm: Gales on Saturday - low activity - Sunday better but xyl sleeping due to night duty so not allowed to turn ant!!! 23cm: reasonable activity but poor condx
G0XDI
70cm: Activity Low and conditions very poor most of the time! Some DX worked and some got aways! very hard work!
G3CKR/P
Put aerial up 2hrs after start of 23cm Trophy to try and activate QSO's for 23cm.Very High winds could only put up 10m.Wind snapped it in half hence 15y and also damaged 1.6m rx dish on 23cm.We managed still to make a few qso's on 70cm.
G3OHM/P
13cm: Conditions very poor, even some regular contacts failed or more difficult than usual. High winds made setting up more difficult. Glad we did not operate beyond the trophy period.
G3XDY
Limited activity, had to fix power supply fault on PA during the contest. Conditions average. 13cm: TX Feeder issue limited activity on Sunday. Otherwise flat conditions and no real surprises. 9cm: Poor UK activity. 6cm: Seemed better than 10GHz in most tests. 3cm: Some surprising failures, limited activity, flat conditions
G3YDY
Conditions poor lack of UK activity
G4APJ
Apparently appalling conditions belied by some good DX Certainly appalling UK participation
G4PDS
Very slow with lots of aircraft scatter
G4RFR/P
Condx flat and activity very low. Lost LNA during the Saturday so ran with reduced RX for most of the contest.
G8ATD/P
Fair
G8CZZ
23cm: Dead conditions and excellent results considering poor ASL
G8DOH/P
Very windy, with occasional showers. Hard going to the East with 4W!
G8HGN
Just on for spells on Sunday. Condx not too bad.
G8CZZ
Dead conditions and excellent results considering poor ASL
G8OHM/P
Another year with antenna rotator problems, proved to be a connector problem this time, but after all the earlier problems with high winds, station closed down early.
GJ7DNI
was good but not many stations from north getting though
M0GHZ
13cm: Difficult condx
M0RRC/P
70cm: Typical 70cms contest..why let a little breeze worry you - after all we went out and braved the weather! hope the May event is better 23cm: bit light on activity and a lack of stations hope the May event is better
M0SKC/P
23cm: Awful conditions and activity but not a bad outing for a first attempt
M1CRO/P
70cm: Hard work setting up in the wind on Saturday. Condx highly unstable - fewer QSOs than expected but good DX to be had. 23cm: Could not raise Clarke mast above retracted until 17:00 on Sat due WX. Doubled height thereafter but may not have improved capabilities much. QSO opportunities seemed thin on the ground. 13cm: Coming to terms with new set-up. Still some way to go... Changes? For sure! 6cm: Late on parade! Finally got time to drop the tower around 17:00. Fixed patching error and started to work stations. Undeniably missed some who would not come back. 3cm: Condx below expected, occupancy similar. Some usually solid QSOs more marginal this time. Probably the wrong kind of rain! 1.2cm: Air too damp to support intended Cross-channel tests as evidenced by poor 3cms signals.
