March 144/432 MHz 2011

Finally a lift which coincided with a contest! The scores and numbers of QSOs made on both bands were the highest for over ten years. Comments on the conditions ranged from "fantastic" to "the best conditions for years". A number of entrants managed to work new all time squares. A few comments were made about the freezing conditions but these were usually forgotten in the excitement of the DX.

On 144MHz there were 82 contacts over 1000kms and on 432MHz there were 67 contacts over 800kms. Most of the UK benefited from the enhanced conditions into DL, F, HB9, OE and OK. While the vast majority of the DX contacts were made in the late afternoon and evening between 15:30 and midnight, some entrants benefited from conditions between 08:30 and 11:30 on the Sunday morning.

The number of entries continues to rise with a greater than 50% increase over 2010. The majority of the increases were in the SF and 6S sections. It is pleasing to note the increased number of entrants active for the entire contest period.

Equipment appeared to be more reliable this year with far fewer problems reported. Very few problems with poor signals were noted.

The standard of logging is generally improving. All elements of the exchange are checked and significant numbers of errors were made with reports and serial numbers. So if unsure - ask for a repeat !.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Five Bells, G5B, who won the open section for the second year running;
  • Matthew, G0XDI, who won the single operator fixed section for the second year running;
  • Dale, G3XBY/P for winning the single operator others section;
  • The Mid Lanark ARS, MM0GPZ/P, who won the six-hour open section;
  • Roger, G3MEH, who won the six-hour single operator fixed section;
  • All other band winners and runners up, who together with stations marked (*), will receive certificates.

Check logs were gratefully received from 2E0LES, 2E0ORC, 2E0VVX, G4GFH, G6NHU, G7HNO, G7HOA/P, G8NWC and M1BXF.

Roger Dixon, G4BVY

Comments from the logs:
2E0BMO
144/432: Avg Conditions on Saturday but good tropo on Sunday. Glad due to other circumstances Op. time was split 3Hrs Saturday 14:00 - 17:00 Sunday 07:00 - 10:00.
2E0DHT
432: Sunny
2E0NEY
144: Very nice condx Sat eve, some great tropo, hrd OK and OE but couldn't work 432: Good fun, although not much heard with my 50w.
2E0VXX/P
144: Good conditions.
G0EHV/P
432: Very good, UK activity not so good. Did I pick the best 6 hours?
G0JJG
144: Some nice tropo. 432: Enjoyable. Plenty of dx.
G0LGS
144/432: Not much heard in IO81
G0VJG/P
144: Not serious entry only one hour operating so in 6hour section. Pleased to wk io97
G0VVE
144: Quite lively for the short time I was on.
G0XDI
144/432: Very nice conditions for a change in this contest. I worked loads of DLs and Fs. Superb fun with new squares worked on both bands
G3BNE
144: Good particularly to the east and just before the end a single stn from scotland (mm0gpz/p) came in strongly for 45 minutes 432: Contacts hard to find
G3CKR
144: Could not get through to OL3Y with low power. Some good contacts on low power from this low QTH. 432: Only QRV for a short while Sunday. Could not raise DF0MU on CW with low power.
G3PYE/P
144/432: Our first entry in this contest. Very good fun, and pleasingly little trouble operating both bands on the same mast.
G3TTC
144: Good
G3XBY/P
144: Occasional lifts to the East. Otherwise quiet. Long MS bursts with IQ3AZ and I5BLH/5 partial contacts. 432: I was on the band long enough to judge. DX seemed good for such a scratch setup
G3XDY
432: Nice conditions, tricky choosing when to go on for the 6hr slot!
G4DEZ
Antenna not working properly
G4FOH
144: Super conditions - great fun. Not much heard from the north though.
G4FUR/P
144: Good level of activity from Europe.
G4GTH
144: Quiet but pleased to work Scotland.
G4HGI
144/432: Fantastic
G4NBS
144/432: Missed the best conditions but nice to grab a few Dx contacts in a contest. Only a token entry but didn't find a lot of UK activity - I worked more on 23!!
G4RQI
432: Flat band
G4XPE
144: Good propogation but less activity than Tuesday evening. 432: Worked all I could hear on this band bar one PA!
G4T
144: First outing for G4T but wasn't really feeling up to it so the planned 24 hour entry has been reduced to 6 hours. Managed to pick up a couple of new squares and a new country though so that was nice. Using the new Skookum Logger for the Mac nice but still needs some tweaks I see a lot of potential.
G4VPD
144: Not very busy
G5B
144: Best conditions for some years in this contest for us. Could have worked many more but where were they all?? Unusual to have antennas and station ready by Wednesday! This allowed for some testing which was invaluable. 432: Some of the best conditions we have had for years-needed more stations to work! 1k+ stations heard throughout the night - needed more! Great to have station ready early & testing done to arrays. Only issue was that HVPSU blew and tripped mains-reserve system used.
G6NHU
Checklog, giving away a few points. New country and one new square on 144.
G6UBM
144/432: The short period I was on activity seemed low
G8DOH
432: Very good extended tropo to SE developed from early evening. Heard very few UK stations and those not so strong, but the OK and more distant DLs were excellent signals on both 2m and 70 cm.
G8EOP
144: Fair to Good just Low number G stations 432: Good to the East & South
G8HGN
144: Some super DX to E & SE also heard EA but no contact. 432: A little activity on Sunday, when 144 was quieter.
G8LZE
Good fun for a couple of hours.
G8NEY
144: Good fun but poor condx to East, although nice to get JO40 and JO50 432: Very frustrating, in the wrong part of country for the conditions
G8ZRE
144: Excellent conditions. 432: Excellent dx worked on 20 watts.
GD8EXI
432: The contest I did not intend to enter just hand out points to the DX but got carried away.
GM3PMB
144: Best Tropo I have experienced. Few G's but lots of DL's and others
GM4JR
Started out to do 6SF - 3 Sat, 3 Sun, but got carried away on Saturday with PA/DL stations. Good fun thanks to all.
GM4VVX
FRUSTRATING ! the opening never quite reached my qth. Almost ALL beams pointing away from GM ? Missed most of my regular contest qso's
GM8OEG
Interesting conditions. Signals here one minute gone the next. Very localised, more Like Es than tropo.
GU6EFB
144: Good cdx to east what happened to the UK stations? 432: Slow going cdx good to east
GW0PEB/P
432: Bright sunshine, light breeze, temp 3deg C, also participating in SOTA activation of Moel Hebog summit GW/NW-014 at 782m asl.
GW3ATZ
432: Only 3 hours on saturday. Fair conditions.
GW8ASD
144: Conditions very good. A nice clutch of 1,000km plus stations. Just giving away points over the full period. 432: Conditions very good. Just giving away points over the full period.
M0BPQ
144: Drifted in and out working CQers as I heard them. Condx slightly above average to the east 432: LX was a new DXCC for me on this band. Very lucky indeed considering my limited time available
M0DSZ
Many UK entrants continuously pointing East
M0ICK/P
Cold and dull to start but excellent dx to EU,
M0MCV
Good to get some tropo coinciding with a contest again
M1FUR/P
432: Seemed hard going throughout.
M4W
144: Suffered connector issue on Pre-Amp but after bypassing it good contacts made.
M6OXO/P
144: Very cold and freezing conditions had to swing beam manually every few minutes as wind was blowing it about "time for a 12v rotator"!
M9T
144: Very enjoyable contest, some very nice dx & the weather was unusually good for March on Dartmoor! 432: Nice conditions & our best 70cm effort to date from this site
MM0GPZ/P
144: I laid the newly fixed 2m antenna sections on the ground and realised it had forgotten to reattach the mast/boom clamp, with a 2 hour round trip to fetch it. 4 U bolts, clamps and some creative thinking and we made a replacement. Only managed 4h 40m on 2m. 432: Good condx best 70cm dx F6DUL/P 1125KM. 70cm linear amplifier died early on meaning 90% of contacts were made with 20w. Freezing cold but good fun.
PD0ME
First time doing this contest since my Novice license 10-03-2010
